The pen cassette slide bar (aluminum) is dirty. Wipe it clean. Lube it. I used a light coating of 3 in 1 oil. Push cassette to the left. Close cover. Turn machine off and on.

DESIGNJET 450C SMEARS (BLEEDS) INK

Most likely the media (paper) is touching the print heads. This can occur because 1) the media holding mechanism is not holding the media correctly, and the media buckles, or 2) the carriage to media distance is too small. (Check the adjustment in chapter 5 of the manual).
I found a copy of the procesure online:

HP Design Jet 450 C won't print

***it could be a communication issue: port setting, cable, ecc.

It could be a driver problem too. You need a compatible version with your Windoes version.

Error lights

Lights are explained in the owners manual. Google HP 450 owners manual if you don't have yours. Various lights can be everything from change the ink to close the cover to Oh Oh, you're in trouble!

Problem with plotter

Are the lights flashing? If they are flashing it is a system error, if they are on steady it is a recoverable error. When you push cancel is the media light the only one or is align media or ready on as well?

Make sure your paper is aligned with the left edge of the rectanglular holes on the right side of the printer paper feed slot

those slots are monitored to check for proper paper alignement and if it is not --it spits out the paper

PRINTER DO NOT ACCEPT PAPER ON HP DESIGNJET 450C

I don't know if you are running in sheet or roll media, but we have this problem with roll media if it is not aligned properly. Usually if I release the media lever and pull 10-12" of paper through and align it with itself and with the dotted line to the right of the plotter, then it will accept it. Sometimes takes several tries. Sheet problems may be caused by dirty sensors. Good luck.

Designjet 450C

In my 8 years of servicing plotters I haven't seen published specs as far as the paper thickness goes. But from experience and seeing my customers produce problems free plots, you don't want to plot on anything past 30 lb media. 99% of plots are done in the 18-24lbs range. Media Types: Paper (plain, vellum, coated, glossy) Film (vellum, coated, glossy, clear, matte), Translucent Bond for Black output only
Hope this helps
