If your LCD screen works normally as a viewfinder and lets you review photos then your shutter is likely stuck in the closed position. If the display is black in all modes your LCD display is bad. Unfortunately, there is no safe DIY fix for either problem. The camera will require professional repair.

Picture does not appear on the monitor, I must look through the view finder to see what I,m pointing at to photograph

The D40x operates as SLRs have operated for half a century, offering you an optical viewfinder with which to frame and compose your picture. The LCD is for menus, shooting information, and reviewing.

Nikon introduced the live view feature, which allows you to hold your camera so it wobbles at arms' length, with the D3 and D300, released half a year after the D40x.

While almost all current DSLRs have this capability, it was not so common five years ago when the D40x was introduced.

Lcd display not working on nikon d40. When we turn on the camera, and take off the lens cap, the lcd display is black. we can use the viewfinder to take a photo. We can view the image after taking the...

The D40 works the same way SLRs have worked for the past half century. Only recently have dSLRs acquired a "Live-View" capability, where you see the image on the LCD monitor instead of through the viewfinder.

I realize this probably wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way it is.

Nikon D40 taking blank/black pictures after I wiped my lens.

Try removing the lens and re-fix it.. Some times the lens is not sensed properly if it is not fixed right.

Cannot take pictures thru lcd screen on d40x DSLR

The D40x is not capable of Liveview - i.e. looking at the LCD to take a picture. You are mistaken.
If you want Liveview, you need to buy the D3 or D300 cameras. The D40x is an entry-level camera.

I think it's one or the other because the camera doesn't know what you want to color and what you don't want to color. Thats something more for Photoshop to do.

Faulty nikon d40

I had the same error message, the camera is less then a year old, however, I was taking up to 800 pictires every weekend of my kids soccer games, then a 6 month trip to the Pursian Gulf, that is when it started, I got back home, took it right in, and one year later after a few visits and calls trying to find out where my camera was, I finally got an answer back, they said I needed a new shutter which will cost $300, They said I should just by a new body for $400. What Nikon does is set that error message to pop up at about 35000 shutter releases, and you can't do a thing about it, once they hooked my camera up to thier system the said I had over 36000 shutter releases, where the average person takes 10000 a year and they want you to replace the body every 3 years....so before buying any camera, always check out how many shutter releases you can get when you buy a camera
