Canon A620 LCD shows "memory card locked" for each card I insert

I have a Canon PowerShot A620. I've been using three different SD cards in it for some time with no problems. All of a sudden, I get a "memory card locked" on the camera's LCD for each card I put in. Cannot clear it using the camera set up menu nor by adjusting the lock mechanism on the card (each shows unlocked). Not sure what else to do. How do I get my camera to unlock the cards? I even removed the batteries and reinserted them thinking it may "reboot" and clear this problem, but it didn't.

I tried your recommendation, but it didn't work. I saw the switch you described, and tried to adjust it but was to scared to mess with it too much in fear I may damage it. I'm sure the switch is the problem, as you described. I may send it in to repair. Thanks for your suggestion. At least now, I understand why it is giving me the "card locked" message. Thanks again!

I may attempt to repair it your way...one more time wehn I have a little more time to devote to it. If it ends up working, I'll certainly let you know.

Stephan, I'm glad to say I tried this again and it did work! I used a wooden toothpick and gently pushed down a couple of times on the switch. It works great and it is as if it brand new again! It only took about 3 minutes! Thanks for your solution!

This worked for me!  I have the Canon Powershot SD780 IS and although my card WAS NOT locked, the camera "malfunctioned" and the switch in the camera needed to be gently pushed back IN, not DOWN on my specific camera type.  This is great, I was just going to go out and buy another camera today!  Thanks for the post Stephan!

SOURCE: Can I use 8GB SD cards in my Canon Powershot A620

The A620 uses MMC and SD cards. SD cards max out at 2GB in size. Larger cards are actually SDHC or SDXC cards and will not work in the A620.

Can I use 8GB SD cards in my Canon Powershot A620 camera? I thought I once read that it will only support up to 2GB SD cards.

Bought new sdhc memory card and it reads memory card error please help

The A620 is designed to work with SD cards, not SDHC cards. SDHC cards will fit into the slot but are electronically different. You'll have to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Some cameras cannot handle over 2GB memory cards. If it works fine with 2GB card - stick to that. If some other A620 you know operates with 4GB card, take yours to repairs.

Canon powershot A620 - putting a a memory card and it says memory card locked - it's a new card and it's not locked - what should I do?

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with your camera.
You'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.

I put a brand new SanDisk SDHC 4 GB memory card in and it says "memory card error; card is locked".

I also own an A620, but unfortunately I also learned the hard way that SDHC cards are not compatible with this camera. The A620 was designed before the newer SDHC format came out, thus although they look exactly the same, your camera will never work with these cards. Your camera uses standard SD cards (2GB or less). There are some standard 4GB SD cards, but they are very rare these days, and costly.

Memory card error

The memory card could be too big. Some camera's can only use a certain size memory card. You will have to check your manual to see what the specifications for your memory cards. Hope this helps.

Your camera has a board with the SD card slot board and electronics to record and retrieve images. This board can be replaced and should cost about $100 to repair.
