Error message 00173,00163 will not boot corrctly

These errors are system options not set, and time/date not set (if I recall correctly off the top of my head)
Basically, you need to replace the CMOS battery.
I would order one online from a place like EVERCORP.com ( a link for YOUR battery is here... http://www.evercorp.com/catalog/batteries/Laptop/Laptop+CMOS/IBM/ThinkPad+600%2C+600D%2C+600E%2C+600X/CR2025-WR/ )
It will cost a lot of money though...almost $10 ! And there will be shipping on top of that, and the battery weighs almost a whole ounce!
If you can maybe second mortgage your house so that you can afford these hefty costs, the installation is almost as hard as the price is high.
Fear not though, installation instructions should come with the battery (which hides in the RAM compartment as I recall).
Once the battery is replaced, set the system options and the time/date, and you should never see that error again!

Got an IBM thinkpad with error 00163?? Any help guy's?

This error code means the BIOS Date and Time needs setting.
This is caused by a flat BIOS battery.
Replace the BIOS battery, it will be a battery with a lead and connector and the battery will have yellow plastic surrounding the battery.

Error 00161 00163 unit comes on and shows this screen any imput would be great thanks

According to the error codes, you have a dead backup battery and the time is not set.

Start with the machine OFF. HOLD DOWN and CONTINUE TO HOLD THE "F1" key.
WHILE STILL HOLDING "F1", turn the power on, and CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1" This will get you into the bios "setup." You should check the date

The "hardware maintenance manual" shows you how to maintain this machine, and it explains the meaning of the error codes.
This will get you started on looking for the manual:

Hello my ibm thinkpad 600E will not come up. it says error 00161 and 00163. what do i need to do?

Do you know how to get into bios/setup?
Start with the machine OFF. HOLD DOWN and CONTINUE TO HOLD THE "F1" key. WHILE STILL HOLDING "F1", turn the power on, and CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1" This will get you into the bios "setup." You should check the date, bootup order, etc, and reset. I would check the "wire" you think you reconnected---you may just not have actually reconnected it.

backup battery = CMOS battery
According to the error codes, you have a dead backup battery and the time is not set. Error: 161
(Dead battery.) 1. Go to Checking the Backup Battery
2. Backup battery.
3. System board.
Error: 163
(Time and date were not set.) 1. Set time and date.
2. System board.

Starting ibm 600e

Hi there.
Errors 161, 192, 163.
All three of these errors are connected to the back up battery.
To resolve this problem:
1. open memory flap on base of laptop (small philips screwdriver required)
2. find the small connector with 1 black & 1 red wire coming from it.
3. disconnect above connector and gently pull the Red&black wires. The backup battery should just pull out from under the casing.
4. get replacement battery. Either
a. call IBM spares (07900 247 490 in UK) and ask for FRU:
02K6502. UK price is about £8 + £15 delivery + VAT.
b. if comfortable with soldering iron: Carefully open the packaging on the backup battery using a sharp knife.
Remove the solder tags from the battery (these are spot welded so need to be cut/broken off). Buy a new CR2025 battery from any computer shop, jeweler, or camera shop.
Using electrical tape, insulate all round edge of battery
Solder the leads onto the new battery - note polarity. Red wire to +, black wire to -.
Using more insulating tape, wrap battery so that all exposed metal is covered.
5. put new battery into laptop (reverse steps 1-3)
6. start up computer, error 192 has gone, but still shows 161, 163. Select OK.
7. reset date & time, and OK
8. when screen shows 'O / I' restart laptop using on/off switch at side.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Need code to boot up

You need a password. Try to remove cmos battery for a few minutes then replace battery then set date and time. This will defeat 2 of the three passwords. The IBM manual describes this process. If the Lock still appears then you may need an EEPROM reader some wire and a soldering iron.

Thinkpad 600E

Error 19990301 on a Thinkpad 600 usually indicates that the hard drive is not properly connected, and error code 19990305 signifies "no bootable device". So, it's the hard drive.

First of all, I would try removing and replacing the drive to see if that cures it. You can get the service manual from Lenovo at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=LWIK-3SYPX2

If this doesn't fix it, the hard drive is faulty. However, small size hard drives (10 or 20Gb) which suit these older machines are very cheap on eBay.
