I have charging problems on a 2002 yamaha 1100 custom. On to seperate occasions my bike just backfired & quit running. The battery was completly dead. It would not even turn the console lights on. I charged the battery &the bike started &ran fine. I checked the voltage with a meter. The charging voltage was low. I ohmed the stator & according to my yahmaha manual the stator was good. I replaced the rectifier & charging now checked good. I put less than 300 miles & the same problem has occured .
Have you checked the fluid level of the battery? sometimes they go dry and it's hard to tell unless you take the battery out. Also if you leave the bike parked for more than just overnights, then I recommend getting a battery tender Jr, it helps keep it charged and ready to go whenever you are :-)Have you checked the fluid level of the battery? sometimes they go dry and it's hard to tell unless you take the battery out. remove the neg cable and place a test light between cable and post and see if light comes on,if so then start removing fuses until it goes out that will narrow down your problem, if the light does not come on have the battery check it could have a faulty cell
sounds like a problem i had with my v star if u can charge it and it starts and runs for a bit then dies again check the rectifier which charges the bike
This would run down the battery. So get the alternator of the bike repaired so that it starts charging again. May be the lead got disconnected and there was no need for a new battery.
put a volt meter across the battery terminals, should read over 12v stopped and rise to 13.5v with the engine running.
If the voltage doesnt rise there is a problem with the charging circuit.
Be carefull starting from a car, as this can cause damage to the bikes electrics, as the bike tries to produce enough amps to charge up the car when the bike starts, and overcook electrics.
Hi Dalemcin,
I had simillar problem,
what I did is I checked the level of fluid in battery and noted that it was drain ( probably evaporated, because the weather temp. where I live is above 40 C) so I replenished the battery with destilled water. Now it works perfect.
If your charging system is working, you can disconnect the battery while it's running, and it will stay running. The stator assembly (Like a car alternator) will supply the current to keep the bike running along with charging the battery. A multi-meter should show around 12.5 volts at the battery with the engine off, and just under 14 volts running, under normal working conditions.
if you are sitting still and not riding the bike (just revving it out till it wont rev any more)then it is notbackfiring as such you have reached the engines rev limiter and it is cutting power to the coils in sequence to protect itself from destruction,if it is backfiring at high rpm while riding then is quite likely the engine is running a touch on the lean side, and this needs to be rectified as an engine run for to long in a lean state will cause premature failure of major engine components(pistons normally melt and weld themselves to the barrells)not ideal at all, hope this helps
