Compaq 4400us windows install fails on errors

Windows 7 should be the OS.
If you go to safe mode, it should complete booting and then you can list the errors but I suspect there is a driver error. Maybe the wrong version in there.

This indicates the correct video driver was not installed and the generic VGA driver was installed.
You can download the drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP orVista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click onthis link to download the drivers: -

If you tried to install the windows XP on a failure HDD then it will behave like this.
You need to check your HDD first, Go to your BIOS and run the HDD Self test.
If it successful then Just format your HDD before installation it should work.
If it failed then you need to replace your HDD.

Run a HDD Test

Restart Computer -> Immediately keep tapping F10 Key which is on 1st row of Keyboard

Go to diagnostics with your arrow keys

Go to Primary HDD Test -> Press Enter ->

See the Test result

If Fail then Contact HP for Replacement of HDD or Service

for bios update go to manufacturers website but to install xp sp2 on this lappy you will have to install third party raid driver and legacy device driver that you can download from www.download .com

Its true. the Bios or HDD driver wont allow you to install Win XP on it.. This BIOS is compatible with only Win Vista. The only easy way to do it is by creating 2 partitions while installing vista. once vista is installed- install XP with Dual boot and than format the vista partition.

How have you tried, just by going to windows update and letting it run?
Does it give you any errors?

You can try downloading SP2 directly to the P.C. then install it from the saved file.

Will windows let you just skip and go straight to SP3?

make sure you have all the other updates first, then try installing SP2

windows xp cant detect ur hdd bcoz its SATA hdd.
Solutions:

1. Install vista instead of XP
2. You need to disable this SATA feature in BIOS to install OS.

SATA disable steps.

1. Restart the computer and start tapping F10 key.
2. Choose System Configuration tab.
3. Disable SATA native support.
4. Save and Exit the BIOS by pressing F10 key
