Use a card reader to download your pictures to a folder you create on your desktop. Then, you can download only the most recent ones to that folder.

When I try to download most recent pictures I am forced to download all that are on camera

It depends on what software you are using to transfer photos from the camera to your computer.
If you install and use the "Camera Window" transfer software Canon included with the camera, you will see you have three modes to choose from, including the option to transfer just the photos on your camera that have not yet been transferred.

Connect the camera with a USB cable to your computer.
Power up the camera.
The computer will detect the camera, and open a dialog box offering you a choice of programs on your computer that can handle photo transfers.

If you choose the Camera Window software, it will open and present a menu with three choices of action. The first option is, "Import images from Camera." Select this.

Another submenu opens presenting these three options:

1. Import Untransferred images. (this is what you said you want)
2. Select images to Import. (manually select just certain ones)
3. Import All images (automatically transfers every image on the card)

Camera Window is just one of many available image transfer applications you could use. They all do essentially the same three things outlined above, including "Import Untransferred images."

Canon included a couple other utility programs on the CD that came with your Powershot A490 camera. One of them, "Zoom Broswer EX" enables you to reload photos from your computer, back on to your camera's image card, if you want to do that.

Well if you are using an application similar to PhotoShop Elements X.X
You go to "File" and look for "import" or "Get Pictures" > "From files and folders"

If touy are trying to download from the camera, go to File > Get from > Camera and import from there.

No DV output from Canon GL2. Using a firewire cable from DV port on camera to firewire port on Mac Pro tower. Attempting to import the camera live to Final Cut Pro. Previously worked just fine.

Was the tape your trying to import recorded on the camera you are trying to import from? I've noticed that sometimes the tape I recorded on my old Panasonic won't show up on my GL2. It's like it's a blank tape, but I know it's not, as I have it labeled. Stick it back into the panasonic and it plays fine.

Importing photos (previously successfully)stops

One way to solve problems like this is to use a card reader/writer. This will get your pictures to the computer from the card reader which appears as another drive. Most newer card readers need no drivers.

If you still want to use your camera to copy files to the computer, then you should uninstall the program and re-install according to the instructions.

Iphone photos

opened iphoto and it gives "no items to import" ? if true try this. when iPhoto is open and your phone is connected, open the albumn of pictures you've taken with your iphone on your iphone. iPhoto should immediately recognize the new pictures you had taken and should indicate "x items to import." x being number of photos. An alternative to this can be If you individually delete the previously imported iPhone Camera Roll pictures using the trash can on the bottom right (touching the screen brings it up), iPhoto will then see the new iPhone pictures for importing. I believe this can be done without opening at the time of sync the iPhone Camera Roll picture album as you suggested. Give these a try and let me know.
