My laptop screen goes black after being idle and will not come back on. The computer is still alive and responds to commands, but the screen will not come back on. If I hit the function key on the laptop, it will enter Standby and then I can hit the power button to wake it up and all is good again. Can't be a hardware problem because the screen looks fine as long as I am using it. What could be causing this??

I have already done that. The machine never goes to sleep. As it turns out, I think there was an issue with the LogMeIn installation on the machine. I uninstalled and reinstalled with the latest version and have not had the problem since.

Hi,
You need to change the power settings and disable the machine from going to sleep and when the hard drives and display powers down.

To change the settings go to the control panel and select power options, in power options you can stop the computer from sleeping and set the display and hard drive to never power down, save the changes and exit. You should not have this problem anymore.

If you need anymore advice please post back.

Regards.

Laptop boots to main screen OK, but as soon as I click any icon, the screen goes completely white and won't respond at all. What can I do?

do a Sytem restore to an earlier Restore Point:

Start the System Restore Utility at a command prompt

1. Restart your computer, and keep tapping F8 during the initial start-up until you get options, select Safe Mode with a Command Prompt then press enter.

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.

3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Look for the most recent system checkpoint created before the errors to restore from.

While you are trying to boot up, before the Windows logo comes up, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Then try to use the option "Last known good configuration". If that one does not work, try to go to the safe mode option

Compaq Presario 1700 Laptop screen flickers and locks up

it sounds possibly that it is going into hibernation. a single press of the power button should bring it back alive.
also feel the bottom of the laptop.... if it is getting close to meltdown you need to clean the dust and dirt from the heatsinks. the fan area may appear to be clear but all the junk gets blown against copper heat sinks so you need to remove the covers to get at it.

Laptop screen turns black

In Windows XP you can disable hibernation by doing the following:
1. Open Power Options in Control Panel
2. Select the Hibernate tab
3. Clear the checkbox for enabling hibernation
This doesn't work in Vista however because the GUI for Power Options has changed and doesn't offer the ability to disable hibernation. But you can disable hiberation in Vista from the command line if you use admin privileges. Here's how:
1. Press the WINDOWS key and type cmd into the Start Search box but *don't* press ENTER
2. Right-click on cmd in the Programs list and select Run As Administrator
3. Click Continue when the UAC prompt appears
4. Type powercfg -h off and press ENTER

IF this does not help write back.
