HP dvd740b does not detect blank CDs and DVDs

I have been burning CDs and DVDs for several years without problem. I decided to use an old Sony CD-RW to transfer some files. After burning files to the CD-RW, my HP dvd740b doesn't recognize blank CDs and DVDs anymore, only CD-RWs. It reads those media, but when I try to burn a CD or DVD, it repeatedly prompts me for a CD-RW. I'm using Nero Express 6, but I've tried other programs with the same result. I've uninstalled and reinstalled device drivers, firmware, and Nero several times. I've deleted the upper and lower filter entries in the Registry and read most of the relevant MS Knowledge Base articles. I used the Nero cleaning tool, but it doesn't delete all Nero personal settings as advertised, so my best guess is there are some leftover files or registry settings that limit burning to only CD-RWs. Either that or the burner is about to die, but why would it continue to read CDs, read DVDs, and burn rewritables without problem?

I'm pretty good with PC troubleshooting, but this one has me stumped.

BTW, My homebuilt is running Windows XP Home, SP2, Pentium 4 3.0 gHtz, 1.5 gig memory, plenty of HD space, no games, McAfee firewall and virus protection, and Spybot Search and Destroy.

Hi,

i think you,ve hit the nail-on-the-head.
The laser has to power up highrer to write a DVD, or ocassionally have a dual laser. 1 for read/write CD. And 1 For Read/Write DVD.
Certain cd roms, only use CD- media. it,s probably worth checking which media is supported by the drive.
Also check the drives aren,t conflicting, on the same ide channel, sometimes swapping channels, ide primary/secondary can help, or swiitching Master/Slave/cable select jumpers on the drives Themselves.

My HP DVD 740 won't recognize blank CDs

Sounds like the lens is dirty. Run a cd cleaner through the drive. That should take care of it.

Why my [sony cd rw dvd rom] will not detect a blank dvd disk

If you have the sony CD RW DVD ROM then you can't burn the data in a blank DVD.

Because your Configuration is :
Read : CD / DVD
Write : CD

This means you have a combo drive. But to burn a DVD you should have DVD RW.

Problem burnind and reading!

Check that the writable DVDs you are using are compatible (+/-) with your LG DVD-RAM.
Go to Windows Explorer and check to see if the Sony drive is visible. It may not be connected or the Jumper switch may be set incorrectly.
Check you have drivers installed, take a look in Hardware manager.
Sometimes, it's a little difficult to copy CDs and DVDs when you have more than one burning suite installed - for some reason, they 'just don't get along'. Try uninstalling any suites other than Nero.
Or it may just be that your LG CD-RW drive is just that, and your DVD-RW drive is just that. So it wouldn't be possible to write DVDs on the CD-RW and CDs on the DVD-RW? Though I would assume Nero would detect that and use your hard-drive as temporary storage.
In Nero SmartStart, have you selected the CD or DVD tab to correspond to the project you're burning?

Need to set up my laptop with DVD RW drive to burn DVD

Yes, you can install the cd with the Nero Software in the new Laptop, and you will be able to write CDs or DVDs, but if you have a combo only you will only be able to write/burn CDs but read DVDs no problem.
