Vacuum emitting strong odors when it's on.

I loaned the Nilfisk Family vacuum to a friend who I think used it to vacuum up incense, now the vac smells like musty perfume every time it's turned on. I replaced the bag, washed the hose and did my best to clean the big filter with no luck. Can the big top filter be cleaned with soap and water?

Hi there SmartAlec from NelsonVacuums.com.au here. I am a nilfisk vacuum agent and although i havent actually worked on one exactly the same as yours there are no Nilfisk with any kind of washable filters at all. I think you will have to replace it. If you are in Australia i can check out the cost of replacement filters for you just drop me an email with the exact model number.
Hope this helps.
Happy Vacuuming :)

I have a 2100 Electrolux cannister vac. I have just noticed an odd odor (similar to burning) and the protection mode light went on. Can you advise of steps to take to rtrouble shoot and what might be...

The motor is probably burning out, or has. Smell the exhaust port. If the odor is especially strong, here, then that's the problem. You'll need to take the vacuum to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for definite diagnosis and repair/replacement of parts.

Nilfisk Family Vacuum - Strong Awful Odor

Not sure what a bacteria smell is perhaps you mean a mildew type smell.
If you have picked up something wet, start at the front of the vac and work your way to the exhaust.Change the front most filter first. Baking soda may help to eliminate some of the odor.
Personally as an allergy suffer, which you may be given the Brand I would remove all and let them and the tank air outside. Meanwhile install a fresh set.

Never heard of this odor but if you have had it in both vacs it might have something to do with a disintegrating rubber backing on a carpet.
Arm and Hammer makes a baking soda based vac powder that will help eliminate some odors.
Do several things , get the powder and pour a tablespoon of it or baking soda into a fresh bag. Keep your filters fresh. If you use washable filters be certain they are thoroughly dry before reinstalling. And use a Mutli ply filter bag.. and NEVER pick up anything wet or vacuum a damp carpet

My filters? need cleaning

most likely the hose is blocked, drop a coin down it to confirm. You are best to replace the filters, they are not very expensive; though they are not likely to be the cause of your nilfisk over heating

Vacuum cleaner smell
Posted by lcw1 on Apr 20, 2008
Our Hoover Windtunnel has recently started emitting a bad odor when we use it. We recently bought a new house, and the previous owners had dogs, but the carpet was professionally cleaned before we moved in. I have replaced all of the filters and belts to no avail. At this point, I have to remove and rinse off all of the filters after every time I use the vacuum to prevent stinking up the entire house. Any suggestions?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.

I think you are right, if it is not the switch then it would be the motor. Does it smell bad like a burning smell? If so it is definitely the motor and then @ that point you may want to get an estimate for motor replacement, and keep in mind of what you spent on the vacuum versus what the cost of repair might be. My own rule of thumb is if it cost more than ½ of the price I paid for it then you have to decide – do I want to pay the repaired cost for the vacuum or do I want to purchase a new one. Just a suggestion... You may want to check with your local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
