Compaq Presario 2500 USB Problem

First try these steps
1.Remove all the usb devices connected, then go to device manager and under Universal Serial Bus controlers uninstall all the usb root hub and then restart the computer
2. If it still doesnt work do a bios update from hp.com for your notebook and then restart and do a bios default too.
3. If these steps doesnt resolve the problem do a recovery and even after recovery the NBs usb ports doesnt work then mother board needs to be replaced as the usb ports are fixed in it.

Alternatively, your ports may simply be disabled in BIOS. If you go to BIOS setup on startup, and examine th esettings, there may be options to "enable" rather than "disable". You may also wish to look at the Device manager for driver issues with these components before fully restoring.

if your external hdd works fine with other computers, then the USB ports on your motherboard does not provide sufficient power to start your external HDD you may use a dual usb cable like this

if your external hdd works the same with other computers then it may be one of two reasons 1- the usb controller inside the external cage
2- physical problem on the hdd it self

Reinstall USB 2.0 drivers.

Did you reset your BIOS? sounds like your usb is not configured properly

Have you checked drivers not only for the usb, but for the chipset of the system itself. Also, have you installed service pack 2?

Might also just visually inspect for troublesome fingers in the ports themselves; often get bent and short out.

You need XP service pack 2 or later installed on your notebook. Does your notebook detect other USB drvices, if not your USB port on the PC is gone. If the USB prt is working and you have XP service pack 2 installed then you probably got a bum DVD drive so return it and get another.
