Can it be fixed or do I need to trash it? Than on my other DVD player it says DVD error. These are movies I rented. I have watched a movie in quite a long time.

Some rented discs won't play becauses of scratches and dirt, if other DVD 'S work it is not your player, but if all won't play try a DVD cleaning kit and follow instructions.
The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, from your description the pladder motor is not turning which means the CD'S & DVD'S are not been sampled for playback. The only way to fix this would be to replace the assembly, not cost effective for repair, much cheaper to buy a new player.
When properly connected to a High Definition display or TV, Blu-Ray Disks (BD) should play crystal clearly. Inserting an old "non-Blu-Ray" disk (or the original "DVD") in the Blu-Ray player will display a comparatively "fuzzy" picture. This is the difference between High Definition and Standard Definition. A "BD player" can not "upgrade" the picture quality on DVDs to that of a BD or High Definition picture.
Rent, purchase or choose Blu-Ray Disks (BD) whenever a choice is offered to view the High Definition version of a movie or video. Selecting the DVD version will provide the lower quality or Standard Definition version of the same movie or video.
Check the covers or disk itself to determine if the movie or video is in DVD or BD format. That will tell you what you can expect for picture quality.
I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thank you.
Somebody said they had the same problem, and suggested the following: On the DVD unit, press STOP and POWER buttons at the same time, and then IMMEDIATELY (1 second or less) press
the PREV button. He said, for him it popped up with WM for the Market and 1 for the Region automatically. The codr WM is 00 if you need it. That was all he had to do, and now it's working. Hope that helps anybody else who comes along with the same problem.
thanks I trashed it and bought a new one :o)
Screen is doubled with a big P-SCAN sign in middle. What do I do??
