Clean/replace the flame sensor. Your heater doesn't recognize that it has lit and continues to try and light the gas. when the sensor doesn't tell the 'brain' it lit? it shuts down the gas for safety reasons.
typically, with a flame sensor/thermocouple issue, you can clean carbon build-up off with fine steel wool or a dollar bill. the idea is to remove just the carbon and not any of the actual flame sensor device. Carbon build up will deflect much of the heat necessary to activate the device. If you can reach your sensor without dismantling anything so much the better. Sometimes the heater just needs to 'smell money' (JK) corny, but true....

SOURCE: Pilot light lit but no heat
the pilot's millivolt generator may be at fault. if you have a meter that is capable of measuring a very small DC voltage, connect it up to the very end of the thermocouple and the copper cappillary. the thermocouple has a welded bead at the very end inside that generates a small DC voltage. Same principle of a J-K thermocouple. Iron constintan - two dissimiller metals where joined together produce a voltage when heated. the thermocouple actuates a millivolt electromagnet inside the valve to keep the valve pellet open. no voltage there it won't actuate the electromagnet.
SOURCE: Patio Heater pilot lights won't stay lit
crappy pilot flame (not properly heating the thermocouple), bad thermocouple, thermocouple loose where it screws into the pilot safety valve, bad safety valve magnet.
One or more of those is the problem.
Oh...there is also a saftey switch...in case it tips over. It will also cause the pilot to not stay lit (if the switch or wires that go to i are faulty)

thermocouples you can buy from any heating spares oulet or national energy a hone well is most common for useing as a replacement

Do you have the serial number or the manufacture date? There are some design changes and I would need to know the year of manufacture to assist accurately. Usually it is a relay or the thermocouple connection that will affect the unit staying lit.

sounds like either a bad thermocouple or more likely a pressure regulator problem. should have unit checked by someone familiar with propane systems.
