Slide the lever on top of the dirt to the side, lift the cup up slightly, and pull it straight out of the vacuum. On most models, the lever will slide to the left. Disassemble the dirt cup by popping the plastic top off the cup.
There can be a couple of things that would shut down your vacuum cleaner. A wiring fault inside the cord retractor, power switch has failed, the motor armature has failed or the brushes on the motor have either worn down past their serviceable life or jammed (unless the motor has burned out - you would notice the smell). If you aren't electrically savvy I wouldn't attempt to disassemble your vacuum cleaner, but all of the above issues can be fixed at home. Take it into a shop for repairs. I have serviced the motors on a number of different vacuum cleaners successfully without having to spend money on repairs except to replace a bad on/off switch for a few dollars.
Someone gave me a Miele S558 with this exact problem and I fixed it by disassembling the power hose and cleaning the contacts, bend them a little bit so that they exerted more force onto the metal ring, and reassembling. The end of the hose that attaches to the canister had the worst connection and this end was the most difficult to disassemble (I actually could not disassemble it completely, just enough to pull out the contacts and cleaning/bend them). Check other answers for how to clean the power hose contacts for more details on how to do this, I'm just saying that cleaning them did fix my problem. Good luck!
Loss of sucktion tells me that you clogged up the hose or over filled the bag. There is a very good chance it will run again in about 20 mi after it cools. It will also turn off after about 5 min if you do not fix the obstruction or replace the bag.
Miele usually doesn't give out manuals on their products. You will need to go through a service provider unfortunately. Or just dig in, but you might not be able to get them to sell you parts.
I just had exactly the same problem. Opened the vac, checked the circuit
next to the motor and it can be clearly seen that the Triac burned thru
the PCB. Will replace it and check again. Vac bought long ago, works
extremely well.
My problem is with the power brush...I checked the belt and cleaned the rotating bar..still very low suction. The canister is still giving me plenty of power...thanks for any help
