If you have a desktop with a qwerty keyboard, try this
Press the Num Lock key (Num Lock light comes on )
Hold down the 'Alt' key and type 156 on the Numeric keypad ,release the Alt key and the pound sign should appear.
If that doesn't work,
Hold down the 'Alt' key and type 0163 on the Numeric keypad ,release the Alt key and the pound sign should appear.
I'm assuming that pound means £ (GBP) and not #...... Do you have the £ sign on the number 2 key? If you do and your just not getting the £ symbol when pressing Shift + 2 then you probably have the keyboard set to the wrong language.
In control panel look for Region and Language settings, in there should be keyboard languages. In that section make sure that you have the correct one selected for your keyboard.

Release the '2' key.
Release the ALT GR key.
Does an '@' display?
Check that you are using the "American English" keyboard mapping.
