If the unit is freezing up then you have a problem. One is the air flow is to low going through the evaporator coil this could be caused buy a dirty filter, dirty coil and fan blade or low freon charge. the lower the fan speed the colder the coil temperature. the coils and unit should be cleaned every year. running your unit on low is not a good idea.

Why is the fan only running on low speed?

Hi David. when the air conditioning is energised by the thermostat it should automaticly bump up to high fan speed, if it has been running for a while it ciould be freezing up the evaporator and causing a restricted air flow to come out. you may need to shut the cooling mode off and just leave the fan running for a few hours. hope this helps

Rv heat pump problems

Open circuit or out of range Freeze Sensor. Air conditioner mode of operation will be locked out. Furnace, heat strip, heat pump and fan mode of operation can continue to operate but displays the last temperature set-point. There is a sensor that detects evaporator freezing, it may be bad or your freezing because of low freon levels

Ac problem

Make sure all fan motors are working properly and you are getting plenty of air flow across the evaporator coil. Any restriction of air flow will cause unit to freeze up.

Unit freezes up, before it cools the room, and the fan motor then gets jammed in the ice.

You are either low on refrigerant, dirty filter or coil, fan motor not running at the proper speed due to bad capacitor or bearing or speed setting to low.

The air conditioner use to drip water - it no longer does drip water and continues to freeze over. what could be wrong

It could either be low on refrigerant, a possible dirty coil, or an air flow problem. Rare cases I've seen dirty condensers cause freeze ups.

Freezes over

If the coil is freezing up it's either a dirty filter, coil or low on refrigerant. Unless somebody went in and changed the fan speed to a lower speed.
