HP dvd640e not recognizing DVD+R DL

Apple mini C2D using anything (Toast 8 usually). IF closing drive to mount in the Finder, I get a message the disc is not recognizable. If to Toast8, Toast says it sees a CD in one box, but the further "disc info" dropdown box shows it is a DVD+R DL. Writing to it then causes instant abort with error.
I have used Memorex discs, and tried a Verbatim as well - same thing.
The bar code says the unit is a dvd640e, Toast sees a dvd640v. Disc info in Toast says it is enabled for DVD+R DL (not the - tho).
I don't generally have trouble with anything hooked to a Mac, but the reference to a blank CD when it is a DVD and the inability to burn DL discs has me searching for why.

6/25/9:  While this external HP DVD640e burner was listed as a NEW drive - "new" meant never used. A check with HP techs told me the unit was a 2005 factory closeout and the dual layer disc required for it is a 2.4 speed disc. I bought a 2.4 speed DL disc and it works perfect in it.  As far as seeing a CD when a DVD was installed is presumed also the fault of having the wrong speed disc in it (that lot of Memorex DL discs I am also having trouble with elsewhere too). Double-checking my profiler, it does give speed as 2.4x as the burner's profile. Alas, the problem was my newness to the DVD technology. A slap to the forehead and move on.

What kind of blank DVDs do I use to copy an old VHS video tape to the DVD? I have the Sony RDR-VX530. When I put a DVD in, I get an Error message saying that I have the wrong DVD.

According to page 30 of the operation manual, the following information may help;

DISCS THAT CAN BE USED IN THIS RECORDER:

4x-speed or slower DVD+RWs
2x-speed or slower DVD-RWs (version 1.1, 1.1 with CPRM) (Content Protection for Recordable Media)
4x-speed or slower DVD-RWs (version 1.2, 1.2 with CPRM)
16x-speed or slower DVD+Rs
16x-speed or slower DVD-Rs (version 2.0, 2.0 with CPRM, version 2.1, 2.1 with CPRM)
2.4x-speed DVD+R DL (dual layer) discs
(when using DVD+R DL discs, see the instructions supplied with them prior to use)
4x-speed or slower DVD-R DL (dual layer) discs

DISCS THAT CANNOT BE RECORDED ON:

DVD-RWs (version 1.0)
DVD+RWs that are not 2.4x-speed compatible
8 cm discs (mini-DVDs)
DVD-RAM (any speed/any version)
DVD-R DL (dual layer) discs in VR mode

A free pdf copy of the manual for this model can be downloaded online.

Hopefully that provides some insight to your question.

Intel iMac: disk does not eject, does not mount, makes no noise

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} Here are some steps I recommend you try to resolve the issue with the disc not ejecting properly. Now you mentioned that you used the drutil tray open command- if that is correct, then for your Mac Mini, that will not work, because that command is for drives with trays only.

In your case, you have slot drive in your Mac Mini so try the command line that I have provided below. It is just a slight modification from what you stated you tried.

-EJECTING DISC USING TERMINAL-

From your Desktop:

•Click anywhere on a blank space on your desktop. Now you should see Finder listed near the Apple menu icon.

• From the Finder menu, click on Go, then Utilities from the
drop-down menu. This will take you to your Utilities folder.

• Locate and open the Terminal application.

• At prompt, type: drutil eject and press the Return key on your keyboard

(NOTE: If you have a CD/DVD drive with a tray, type: drutil tray open press the Return key on your keyboard).

If that procedure with Terminal does not work, there are two applications that you can try:
Disk Utility- You open the application, select the affected disc or the optical drive in the left sidebar window. Then select eject from the top of the Disk Utility menu. See if that work.

iTunes- Simply open the application, and select the eject icon at the bottom of the window.

Last but not least, I did notice you did not mention that you try this procedure:

Reboot your Mac Mini.
As the Mac Mini boots up, hold down all mouse buttons and keep holding them down until (hopefully) the cd ejects.
I am not sure if you have done all of these processes for ejecting your disc, but again these steps were not mentioned in your initial inquiry.

Let me know if these additional steps have helped or if they are in fact redundant.

Powerbook will not read or write a fresh dvd-rw

You cannot write onto a dvd-rw that has been formatted for Windows using a Mac Superdrive. Most likely, when you put the dvd-rw into a Windows machine w/Visa, you erased it, but actually it formatted the disc for Fat32 or other Windows format. Mac's are often brand-sensitive often when it comes to DVD. I've had luck with Memorex and HP, or Apple has their own which will work (from an Apple Store or Best Buy.)

HP Pavillion 1540n cd burner doesn't recognize discs

Your drive is most likely dead - sorry. DVD burners are not the hardiest of technologies and frequently die with enough use. Thankfully they are usually only $30 to $50 to replace with an non-hp OEM drive. These can be found at smaller computer stores, rather than places like BestBuy
However, most of these drives won't have lightscribe, so you will lose that functionality.
Of course, you can replace the drive with another lightscribe drive from HP, but that will cost you a lot more usually.
Good Luck!

Initializing disc

Yes - you're trying to initialise a +R DL.

Two problems
1. The DC210 only takes - format DVDs

2. You only need to initialise DVD-RW discs (see page 57 of the manual)

By initialising the DVD+R you have written to it once. having done that, you cannot write anything else to that disc. I find it easier to use DVD-RWs so that I can re-use them.

Good Luck.
