Same problem I have a vgn-sz430 with the same NVIDIA GeForce 7400 GPU. Recently my light switched to the stamina side after an unfortunate automatic vista service pack 2 update. (darn those things) I reinstalled windows. Its wont even switch over when I run ubuntu. Or OSX. I have no idea. THe same issue with the drivers, they are present but missing. I can view them through Riva Tuner(NVIDIA product) My feelings are that we played games on the speed setting for too long and burned out the GPU. I hope thats not the case. But it seems that way. And not to many people have this problem it seems because there is not alot of info on the subject. I hope some people respond to this thread. I would like to get my lil system running again. Guru's please help us! I cant afford tech support. And my computer is my life. With that slow settting, my poor pc is weak. Thank you

But sometimes it work on windows 7
Aslong it`s a 32 bit system.

Yes, the VAIO model VGNSZ220/B is shipped with two Video Cards. Original - nVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 Graphics Controller Driver and Intel 945GM Express Video Driver. As far as I'm aware, the Speed mode uses nVidia and Stamina mode uses Intel Video driver. As you said, you already tried performing a system recovery using the recovery discs, it is clear that the issue is hardware related. There is a button on the Computer to change the modes among Stamina and Speed. You may try pressing that button and then try to boot the computer. But based in the information you have provided, the issue seems to be with both the Video card or the motherboard.

As you tried connect the notebook to a external display and it didn't work. The best option is to get the unit serviced. Either you may contact your favorite technician or you can contact the Sony service center at:

Nahh...you can use that gpu with that mobo, but i wouldent recomend it. The GPU - Requires NVIDIA HybridPower™- enabled motherboard, and that mobo dosent have that. It might work but you cant use the full power of that gpu on that mobo. And beside that, that gpu is bigger then the mobo itself
I sugest you to buy another mobo, the gpu you looking at is a good one but your mobo isent that good.

If you CAN run two of the GeForce 7400's, (meaning you can slot both of them in PCI Express), then yes, that would be faster than a single GeForce 8400. You'd be running them in parallel, using what Nvidia calls "SLI Technology", and two GPU's will be faster than the one, at least in this case.

This IS very likely a hardware problem. I'm not very sure about your model but I know that many SZ users w/ G84xx/G86xx NVIDIA card out there are having similar problem -- could be due to NVIDIA chip failure.

Sony had just acknowledged this problem (failed G84/G86 NVIDIA chips) recently but unfortunately SZ series models were not included in the list.

In case you're using SZ model and are having G84/G86 nvidia card, just give sony service center a call, at least to let them take your issue into their record.

It depends on the game. And how detailed the game is. like basket ball vrs. mario you know. differen't graphics differen't speeds. Some time you can adjust the speed on the game which will in turn force the speed of the graphics card.
