Another possible reason is tha the phone or SIM could be stolen and the network has blocked the devices.

This happens,when we use our Nokia 1100 for a long time.When we put the phone in keypad locked mode,the cellphone cannot refresh it's state,but the signal comes to your phone.When we again take our phone and start working,it gets refreshed and shows signal.
The actual problem is,When we take our phone and start working and at that time also if the signal is not provided,we have to search it manually to get our home network.

its not the software had the problem my dear, it is on the hardware,, you must open the phone and on the top of LCD there is and SIGNAL receptor on it,, kindly connect the signal receptor or you go w/ technician
