Volume Control Issue

I suddenly started having a strange problem. My volume is at a fixed level up to -20 db. Then when I hit -19 it jumps very loud. Go to -20 and it drops greatly. Sound is clear otherwise. It's like there is 2 adjustments, medium and loud.

SOURCE: Pioneer VSX-D209 receiver shuts off when too loud

Dear Tabasco,

Your receiver is basically going into protect mode.

Just check your speaker cabling again. Make sure that all of them are seated properly, none is touching each other or the body of receiver. Take out all the wire and put them back again if necessary..
Some times even a little tiny frayed wire touching the receiver could trigger the protect mode. Be careful, since protect mode is sometimes not fast enough and it could blown a few trasistors in the power circuit.
Just check your speaker as well....whether they play all right thru another receiver or amplifier. its posiible they might be shorting inside. A little frayed wire could also trigger the protect circuit in your receiver.
I hope this should solve your problem.

If everything else seems all right and still your receiver shut down when you raise the volume then it possible that there are bad connections on the main board that are set in.

This would generally happen if the system is slighly old or have dry solder and when you raise up the volume. This should be a simple repair that will not require parts. If you can solder, you will be able to repair this yourself. If not, then a local service center will change the local labor rate.
Hope you can sort out your problem with the above trouble shooting. Let me know if I can guide you further.
Best of luck! Thanks for using FixYa!

SOURCE: Receiver won't let volume go higher than -7 dB

Actually, -7 db and above woul be quite load.

Anyway, I am not very familar with the Pioneer GUI auto setup. But, am aware of how AVR are set-up.

If you have set up the home theatre by auto/manual setup then please check the channel levels whether any of your channels settings is at +7.0db.

If so, reduce this setting where it more +7.0, then you would be able to raise the overall main setting from the volume control to go higher than -7db.( by as much as you've lowered the particular channel setting)

Please do let me know if this helps.

SOURCE: D608 - Volume Problems

I just picked up one at the dump. You have to take apart the front end by unscrewing screws and pulling out ribbon edge connections. It is easier than some components. Then pry off two of the small clamp downs on the front of the volume potentiometer; pry apart about 1/32 of an inch and spray control cleaner for a second and clamp down. repeat on other side.
worked for me.

Try cleaning it with WD40. or some other penitrating fluid. Or just a hoover nozle. It's just dirt in the control.

SOURCE: I don't have sound even if I turn knob at top

Turn it down to 1/4 while troubleshooting or you may destroy your speakers after you find that button, whatever it is.

Has it NEVER worked or did it suddenly start acting this way?

Do ALL sources act this way or only one(some)?

I'd look for a the Mute button or a Tape monitor incorrectly selected.

How to level subwoofer out

Either the receiver with a dedicated subwoofer outlet has a level control or the powered subwoofer has a volume control. If it is a passive woofer without an amp you better hope that the amp has a level control for the output - if not you are out of luck in properly setting the level.

If you have a sound equalizer, it has a volume control - you can plug the receiver output into it, leave all the controls at zero db level, and use the overall volume control on the equalizer to achieve your objective.

I have the following setup: AV Receiver: Pioneer

Very common problem with today's receivers. Receivers made today don't have a true preamp section in the amplifier and do not amplify the sound to the extent of an older receiver. I have large 15" front speakers on my system, and have stuck with my 15 year old receiver just because I know that a new receiver will not have the power to drive them well. Many of the newer receivers need to be turned up to 50-60% before you can even hear anything from the speakers.

My son's Leapster Explorer suddenly has no sound. If you hit the increase sound button, nothing happens. If you hit the decrease button you see the volume bar on the bottom of the page. Do you know...

I had same problem, just fixed it by a little hack. The volume up switch is broken.
1. Remove accessory door on bottom. 2. Remove all screws on back. 3. Open back cover.
Looking at the exposed board, there are 2 volume switches (back to back). Directly next the switches are four contacts: the upper 2 are for volume down, the lower 2 are for volume up.
4. Place the battery pack on the board and hold it down. 5. Press the power button to turn on the unit. 6. Use a small wire to jump the volume up contacts multiple times to change the volume to maximum (or desired level). 7. (Optional) Remove the volume buttons and throw away the rubber cushions to prevent the volume from changing. 8. Replace everything back in place.

I have a Musical Fidelity A1008 integrated amplifier. It has one problem which seems to persist despite 3 attempts to fix it. When I try to tune down the volume, it makes a sudden jump, then it goes down....

The volume control on modern units is done by a chip inside the unit. That determines the volume and sometimes things like the tone. The fact that it is intermittent, probably means it suffers from a heat problem. The only cure will be a new chip. If you can do this yourself then just follow the volume control wires back to the main board.
If you can't it's off to the repair shop with it.

My 2001 330ci has the Harmon Kardon sound system. However, when I run the system at high volume for about 5 minutes, the front speakers start cutting in and out. It doesn't seem like a speaker is blown,...

Thermal issue is shutting down amps till temps moderate. You must be driving your system too hard. And check out your tone control settings especially the bass. Every 3 db boost forces amp to double power at that frequency so if you are already blasting at 100 watts, a 3 db boost will compel amp to put out 200 watts, etc. Very easy to overdrive and overheat amp. You might want to try blowing air over output stages to improve cooling at high volume levels.

You are lucky that you have good protection circuits - otherwise by now you would have blown the output stages.

Denon AVR 1910 Volume Level

My Pioneer VSX-36TX (circa 2002) does the same thing. Modern AVR's count up from minus something to 0db and go just a few db higher into 'plus' territory. It seems arbitrary but that's how it is.

Ask yourself this: who ever really turned the volume knob up to maximum on any amp on purpose, and had speakers survive it? In other words, why have all that capacity on a potentiometer if you never use it?

Little known fact: With that in mind, Bose Corp actually designed a product that intentionally used the full physical travel of a volume control - the Bose Acoustic Wave Music System.

Hum in sound volume

It could be a few things. The first thing you want to look at is make sure that the microphone is muted in the mixer controls of your audio cards. These settings are located in the control panel. If you need the mic, look under the advanced settings under it and disable the 20 db option for it.

If that doesn't work I have a few other ideas.
