U11 Error and Clicking

My Panasonic DMR-E30 has been working great for years -- but all of a sudden, the following happens:

1. I insert a DVD
2. The display on the TV says that it is reading the DVD
3. It keep reading (while making a new "clicking" sound on and off for about 10 seconds)
4. The U11 error comes on the screen and it does not play the DVD at all.
5. This error is for any DVD I've put in (both pre-recorded -- new and used, and blank DVD-R)

I'm interested in taking it apart myself if someone can talk me through it to troubleshoot or fix the problem -- or I'll take it to a shop to be repaired if the work is out of my league.

Thanks in advance to anyone that might be able to give me any suggestions or help with it!  I really appreciate it!

I have the same problem with this unit and with a newer unit (LG DVR and Video Tape recorder).. Although my Panasonic usually plays DVD's that I recorded myself.. This may be due to the newer prerecorded DVDs... Try connecting the unit directly to the TV without going through a surround sound system or other device. Try it with and without using an HDMI cable.

Check your settings and make sure it is not set for Ratings. You can also try resetting the unit, by holding down the power button until it shuts off and turns on again (about 15 seconds)

It ay be caused by the way that the discs are formatted to prevent piracy...

    Good Luck!

Works fine with new disc, but if it is scratched at all, it does not play. Tried reset and it is hooked straight to the tvv. Any other ideas?

having the same problem, with all discs. New, recorded by myself, movies from the store. Nothing. I insert disc(s) and it says it's reading, and then I get a U11 code, and then it says NO DISC.

    Need help.

Won't recognise DVD Ram and non-finalised discs from own recordings.

Hi,

Usually, the U11 error code in a Panasonic DVD player indicates an optical problem. You could of course try doing a cleaning using a CD cleaner normally readily from computer parts stores. Alternately, you can open the unit up and do a manual cleaning with soft bristle brush and/or cotton buds. Other than that, it could be indicative of a weakening laser eye which of course would require parts replacement.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you

need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa..

Always get a U11 code when using blank dvd-r to record

You could try using a DVD lens cleaner (wet or dry type, whichever is available; but it MUST be the manufacturer's recommended DVD lens cleaner (or suitable equivalent) - do not use CD/DVD generic cleaners, they might be cheaper, but these do not work and may damage the unit).

If after following the directions on the pack, the recorder still shows U11, then the drive is probably on its way out. Considering the cost of a new DVD-RAM drive is around $300 or so, plus labour (if applicable), it may not be economical in the long term.

Nevertheless, try cleaning the laser lens (either with the DVD cleaner discs), see how you go. I usually try to avoid opening drive units up in cases of cleaning, however, I have found short bursts of compressed air through the drive from front to back usually solves most dust-related problems.

Panasonic ES40v - Can't play DVD's - Incorrect region

I had the same trouble, also wouldn't play back discs that I recorded using it. The commonly listed reset of channel up and down at the same time was not meant for this model.
Below is the official solution that was sent to me by panasonic.
After using this method to reset my player it worked great. it was just like taking it out of the box for the first time.

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your inquiry, reguarding model DMR-ES40V.

Try this reset to fix the issue.

1. Unit power must be on.

2. Press [STOP] & [VHS > DVD] ON THE UNIT for over 5 seconds.

Thank you for contacting Panasonic.

Panasonic DMR-ES40VS

I called Panasonic, and they told me to try a reset. I'm sorry, but I forgot which button to push and hold to reset it, but it has worked GREAT ever since! A local shop said it was a loss when I described the problem to them. Call the Panasonic Service Center, and they can tell you how to do a reset.
