Steps:
1) Disconnect the nuvi from the charging cable.
2) Press and hold the battery meter icon for 8 seconds. This puts the nuvi into "system test" mode.
3) Plug in the power cable.
4) Click "Exit." The nuvi will reboot, but remain in GPS mode!

Thanks for useful info. I tested my leads and some have the link, some don't. I've kept the ones with the link separate for charging.

I had identical problem on my 250W - The trick is to hold down the bottom left hand corner of the screen on start-up. This by-passes the Garmin USB mode and goes straight to maps.

Solution # 2 works perfect, but you have to repeat it every time you start your engine. But you get used to it! Thanks!

I have a problem, bought a 2nd hand Garmin without a charger /powerunit for cheap. By sheer luck I bought on a bootsale a Garmin charger for a car a genuine one, but the mini usb was chopped off. It only cost me 25 eurocent so. I did solder a mini usb on it but when connecting to the pc it goes in charging mode.Same happens in my car. Did I wire it wrongly or do I need a resistor or should I apply the solution 1 mentioned? Please help!

You need a plug with USB connection for your car and a USB cable that is just ready for only loading, so the part of data communication should be excluded in this cable. This cable cost in Holland 8,00 euro and it works perfectly!

Computer doesn't recognize garmin

Your computer uses USB Mass Storage Mode to detect your Garmin unit. If your computer does not detect your Garmin unit, you can try these troubleshooting steps:

Unplug the USB cable from the computer.
Turn the unit off and then back on again.
Plug the USB cable into your computer.
The unit either automatically goes into USB Mass Storage Mode or displays USB Mass Storage Mode as an option on the screen.

Note: If your computer still does not detect the unit, make sure that you plug the USB cable directly into the computer USB port and not the USB hub. If the cable is already plugged directly into the computer, try plugging it into a different port.

If you still experience problems, please contact Product Support.

Garmin nuvi 40 goes into usb mass storage mode when pluged to charge

I updated my Nuvi 40 with the latest software and it will not reboot into GPS mode with the usb cable connected. It used to work. I have figured out how to get it to charge with a standard USB cable:
1) Power it on.2) Press the battery icon for 8 seconds - it will enter TEST mode.3) Plug in your USB cable from the PC to the Nuvi - the screen will change to say charging.4) Press the power button 3 times rapidly - it will say Charging across the screen and it will go dim and then dark.5) To wake it up and use GPS mode while charging simply press the power button 3 times rapidly, again.
Works Great!

My nuvi is in mass storge mode when I plug in 12 v.how to get it out of mass storage mode

Sometimes this happens because the car charger plug is not pushed fully into the back of the satnav even though it feels like it is. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.

Whenever I turn on my Nuvi 200 it shows the mass storage mode icon and will not display maps. How do I get rid of this problem?

With a Nuvi, If a Garmin or Garmin compatible power cord is not used, GPS will stay on the USB Mass Storage mode and will not go to Map Screen even though connector fits fine. In this case GPS can slowly charge. So, you need to find/obtain a power supply that works right.

My nuvi 1490t came with a short USB cable. When I plug it into my computer the GPS screen shows the mass storage icon anfd the batterydoes not seem to be charging/

When you plug it into your computer the satnav is meant to go into the mass storage mode. It should charge but it charges at only half the speed it would with a charger (i.e. it takes approx 8 hours to charge.)

Nuvi 205 will not charge keeps going into mass storage mode

The "problem" is with the charging cable. The mini USb connector, needs to have a 17,3 KOhm resistor between pins 4 and 5(ground).
This will solve your problem.

How do I know that the GPS is charging. The light is green when pluged in. Should it not be red then go green Lorraine

On a Nuvi 200W, when you plug in the charger, the battery status icon should go away indicating that you are no longer on battery power and that you are now running on an external power source. You should also hear a beep when you plug in the charger.

To go into charge mode, move the on/off switch to the left like you would be going to turn it off but only hold it on long enough until you hear it beep or the screen goes black and says "Battery Charging". When the battery is fully charged, touching the screen, it should say "Battery Charge Complete". If its not fully charged, touching the screen, it will say that it's still in charge mode.
