Dont knowhow to turn on?

there is little slider door on the left side of the laptop. you push it toward the back then press the power button that you just exposed

The ON/OFF could a switch that "slides" about 50 mm,
or it could be a button with an 'I" inside a "circle".

So, look for a "slider" or a "button" on the side(s) of the case.

Try to replace the battery or take it out all together. but first check to make sure that the chager is the right one. Yes, it should run WinXP. The minimum system requirements to run both Windows XP Home and Professional are 233Mhz, 64Mb RAM and 1.5GB hard drive space. I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 that still runs XP, a little slow, but has run smoothly for 5 years.

The setupdd.sys error is most likely a due to a defective hardware like RAM. Try installing only one ram if you have two to see if either one is defective; it should work for most users.

I'm not clear on your description, so here goes:

If it showed the Toshiba start screen, then asked for a password, then your hard drive is password protected.

If it showed the Toshiba screen, then asked for password, and you entered it, and then it goes "insert disk", then your hard drive is passworded and wiped.

If the first thing it does is ask for a password, then the password is in the BIOS.

do you even see the toshiba logo on boot up ?

COuld be a simple case of the screen catch hole where the lid locks shut getting stuck (fluff ?) jab it a few times with a paperclip. Worked wonders on an old tecra I had. If it is not this it may well be the inverter which needs changing - this is a kind of starter / voltage regulator fot the FL tube.

hmmm..that means that your bios needs some attention...it's not too hard to look into that, and see that your disks and other stuff are aligned. You been in the Bios before?
