The installation CD I never used as the player was accepted without it! And from one day to the next the player was unknown! As I do not have the installation cd anymore where or how get the player started again! Sony was not very helpful!
I have a Sony NWZ-S638F and this just happened to me - I think a registry clean up utility did it but in could have been a Norton 360 reinstall too. I am not technical but I stumbled on a solution.
I realised that something had gone wrong when connecting the player's USB cable I heard a triple bong instead of the usual upward double bong. The computer was recognising a connection but the device could not be found anywhere - believe me, I searched.
The device manager for the player said "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
Anyhow, I tried system restores which didn't work. I tried reloading the software from the Sony DVD which didn't work. Finally, I decided to uninstall the driver through frustration and partly because I thought it low risk as the player is meant to be plug 'n play and I've got the DVD so if all went bad I should be able to reinstall and be no worse off.
I went to Device Manager, selected + at Portable devices, double clicked Walkman NWZ-S...etc selected the driver tab and clicked the uninstall button. I then connected the player using its USB cable and heard the upward double bong. Eureka. After following the on-screen instructions for a new device and it works just fine.
Hopes this helps.
