I have a problem with Adobe Reader. Having tried to install v 8.1.0 I recieved message 1714 saying the older version of reader could not be removed and thus it could not be installed. In the meantime I cannot read pdf files at all.
DK50, your problems seem to stem from corrupted registry key(s). While this should fix your issue in the short-term, bad registry values are never a good sign. I would suggest you visit microsoft's site and search for a registry repair utilities for your operation system version such as http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=56d3c201-2c68-4de8-9229-ca494362419c&displaylang=en (windows 2000). As a rule of thumb I always recommend a complete fresh install every 2 - 3 years (at least) and of course only after backing everything up. Hope this helps. =)

I was able to remove Adobe 7.0.9 by getting feed back from "question to google crowd"!
1. I had to download a program that removed the "setup" from the Adobe 7.0.9 on my computer.
2.I then downloaded Adobe 8.1 (with the understanding that since "7.0.9" now had no setup instructions" there would be no problem with the "8.1" download) -
3.Once "8.1" was downloaded I went to "ADD/REMOVE" and removed "7.0.9" - this time it worked just fine - no message that I had to find a folder with "7.0.9" .
4.After removing "7.0.9" I removed "8.1" with the ADD/REMOVE program;
5.All Adobe was removed from the computer..I then downloaded ADOBE 9 from Adobe's website.
6.I went to my portfolio to check it out and the pages came up without a hitch.
Goodluck to those who have had a similar problem.

oddly enough, you may find that updating the version 8.0 you have to 8.x will then allow you to remove it (or it will work correctly) can you open the reader manually in the programs list? if so open it, then go to help and check for updates. apply the updates. If they work you should be in good shape.
Try to revome the old version by yourself, after that instal the new one.
If that dosent work, try to reinstal an old version first, then uninstal the same and instal the new one.
Seen this problem before, and one of the solutions obove should work for you.
Gem7 again, I just posted my last comment about 15 minutes ago but thought I should say I also just tried to install the 7.0.9 version as recommended on the Adobe website because of the security problem facing the old version I have (7.0.8). It came up with a message saying "Error 1714. The older version of Adobe Reader 7.0.9 cannot be removed contact your technical support group." Same as what I said happened in my last post when I tried upgrading to the 8.1.2 version! The last time I used Adobe according to my control panel was in 15/5/2006, so almost 2 years ago now since I've had this problem so I can't restore my system to an earlier date because I haven't saved any system restore points prior to this date. I don't know what else to try, can anyone please help? Thanks Gem.
Ans: Click Start go to control Panel Click addorremove Option next you see more softwares list chek adobe acrobat reader then click remove then your UnInstall y or no geting this messege click yes click next remove copleted Successfully next Restart computer you install new version okkkk
i order to update the adobe acrobat reder run the set up it will automatically detects the old version and asks for update or uninstallation of old version follow the steps and ull get it installed after that if the setup did not detect the old version on ur computer then the existing version on ur computer is not installed properly or there is no any acrobat reder software in ur computer
Hooray! Found the solution. Seems the problem is you must have the Adobe Reader 7.0.9 installer on your system to be able to install 8.1.1. You can d/l version 7.0.9 (which includes the installer) here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/read...llversions.html Install the whole thing, then you should be able to install your 8.1.1, which will remove the 7.0.9 version in the process, but will use its installer.
