Question about Toshiba Satellite A60 Notebook

Toshiba satellite laptop 1900 - does not accept usb2 card

This laptop is a few years old and came with 2 usb ports and the promise that it would be upgradeable to USB 2 when the standard was finalized.  However, when "Best Buy's" "Geek Squad" tried to install a USB 2 into the card slot, it keeps on dumping (blue screen) and then freezes.

I would appreciate any suggestions, since in all other ways the laptop works well.

Thanks

Recently, when I insert a USB flash drive into my laptop's USB port, I get the message: This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a HI-SPEED USB 2.0 port.

Your laptop has USB1 port and the USB 2 message will appear if you plug an USB 2 device into this USB port.
You maybe able to upgrade the USB port to USB 2 if there is a BIOS upgrade available from the laptop manufacturer's WEB site.
If not you maybe able to get an USB 2 PCMCIA card to install into the PCMCAI slot on your laptop.

USB Port can preform faster error message

This is because you are plugging in a USB 2 device to a standard USB port, or a USB 3 device into a USB 2 port. The computer is just telling you that if you upgrade the hardware, the device will work faster. Its more of an information message than an error. Your device should still function fine.

I have a HP Compaq 6810s laptop and I have a 1gbps network connection for all other PCs in our office but this laptop. I am guessing that the laptop only has a 10/100 network cable port. Is that correct...

a 10 year old laptop. 2007, with XP or vista the DEAD OS.
siddiqui is wrong, there are zero chances this intel chip can go 10 time faster ever. why not look it up first , then answer>?
https://www.intel.com/content/dam/doc/datasheet/82562g-10-100-mbps-plc-datasheet.pdf

nor is second answer right, USB ports, do work. and are faster that 100....MB/S
wlan is upgradable. in all cases. even by country RF rules.

no PCMCIA (PCcard slots) HP uses express card slots 2004 and newer LT.
no mini-PCI slots, for LAN.

yes, old PCs do not have Giglan ports, Ethernet 1000)
compaq 6810s you meant 6820 right? cant find anything on 6810s
zero.

the 6820 has Intel 82562G chip for this.
1 x network - Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX - RJ-45

the main board has wireless module but no wired, module
the intel chip on board does all that. Ethernet slow.
to upgrade , the only path on stinky laptops is USB ports.
a USB /LAN dongle and express card slot.

the problem is getting USB to fast enough,
it has 3 x USB2.0 (not usb 3, that came out 2 years later)
usb2 is 480Mbit/sec rated ports.
1000

so what can you expect from a USB 2 /lan dongle?
ego this. (ive never tired it on my old LT (cache)

you can not get 1000 mbit/s speed of any 480port. USB2
1 gigabit per second, (or gigalan speeds)
but try it, see how fast it can go on USB2.
be fun to try and some are only $10 cost, search find, try./

this PC has an Express CARD port.
if luck this might work but are not cheap

When connect high speed usb to my older laptop it runs very slowly.can you suggest me what drive to download?

Your old laptop itself may not have a high-speed USB 2.0 hub... no matter what driver, the hub may not support the new USB peripheral!

Check in your device manager (at the bottom of the list) to see what you've got. If it's an old hub, you are out of luck :(

How do i find what version my usb ports are i think 2.0 and if a something specifies usb 1.1 how can i revert them back is this an issue?

If your machine is less than 3 years old then the ports are definatly USB 2.0. These are 100% compatable with all USB 1 devices so you won't have any problems. The quickest way to check is through the BIOS. Just hit delete a few times on startup to enter the menu. You could also connect what you know is a USB 2 device i.e ipod or something. If a window pops up telling you the device can run faster then you only have USB1. If you don't get this then it's USB 2

Need to upgrade my usb ports to 2.0 for my laptop

Sorry to say that there is no way to upgrade usb 1.1 ports to usb 2 as it is related to the chipset connected to them. Windows service packs do not help in this case where it is hardware to be changed. Try looking for a PCMIA card that has usb 2 ports on.

UPGRADING USB 1.1 TO USB 2

I searched and found a 1/2 height PCI card with 2 USB ports, plus a internal connector for two more ports. My little NetVista will not hold a full-height PCI card. Get out your tin snips.
Works like a charm !
FYI: I disabled the BIOS USB support for the old ports, and plugged the old MB cable into the new PCI card. I now have two 2.0 ports on the front, and two 2.0 ports on the back. However, I lost the ability to boot from USB

windows xp, yes. just look for printers which support windows xp.

you may have to upgrade your ram, but many hp machines (as well as other brands) will support pentium II's (10 year old technology) as long as they have 128megs of ram and a usb port. you may also have to update internet explorer (prolly to register the new printer).

the hardware interface matters only when it comes to printer port v/s usb, and most laptops and printers made in the last 5 years will all support usb. make sure the printer does not specify usb 2.0 in its minimum requirements, as this is a fairly new usb standard which was not around 5 years ago.

otherwise, make sure your laptop supports the other minimum requirements for the printer, as the printer's software may not load if the minimum requirements are not meant.

personally, i would recomend an hp, and a simple one at that; the more bells and whistles (such as flash card readers) the harsher the minimum requirements will be.

USB powerloss?

As you have already stated that the port in question can run a standard optical mouse, the port seems to be working fine.

Sometimes the drivers for a USB device need to be installed for each USB port. Maybe you have installed these drivers for 3 of your 4 USB ports, but not for the one in question, result of which is the problem you face.
