How much coffee would it take to make the 55 cups in this coffee maker, and can you use the same coffee as you use for drip machines?

Your model sounds like the West Bend 59055 - Large Coffee Urn, 60 Cup.
The User Manual for your coffer urn can be found here:

http://www.westbend.com/supportdata/L5613B_LargeCapacityUrns-All.pdf

Instruction for making coffee can be found on page 5. For 55 cups is would take 3 1/4 cups of coffee.

Use an electric perc or regular grind coffee; if you grind your own this should be a medium to coarse grind.

Do not use 'drip' or finely ground coffee as this could plug the drain holes in the basket and cause the urn to flood.
