I have a new (3 weeks) Holmes air purifier. After a week of sitting on my bedtable, I noticed black sooty powder on my bed table and a week later, I found the same powder on the wall. It has ruined my wall paint. This looks like charcoal powder. We have the unit sitting with plenty of space around it, and in the right position.  This is a very small air purifier..just for the bedroom.

It looks like you may need to change your filters. It is advisable to change filters every 3-6 months for optimal use. When replacing your filters, make sure that the unit is turned off and unplugged from the power. Once filters are replaced, turn on your unit then press and hold the filter check indicator button for 3 seconds. The indicator light will blink 3 times and turn off, and reset the filter change timer.

while running, press and hold the filter reset button for 3 seconds.

It is the excess toner brushed off the paper. Don't worry its completely normal.
