I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that just died. Green light on power supply goes out when I try to restart. Is this a battery or power supply issue? I tried removing the battery and starting, but it does the same thing.

Hi HappyJack,

Do you see the green light going off on the AC adapter right when you plug in to the system ? If yes, it could be an indication of a faulty motherboard. Check if the AC adapter light remains on when it is not connected to the system. You may also try releasing the static power by disconnecting all external devices (Including AC adapter and battery) and holding the power button down for 15-20 secs. Check if it helps. Also try with a known good adapter if there is one. Let me know about the light indications in the system when this issue occurs.

Thanks and Regards.
Kiran Kumar.

Testimonial: "Hi Kiran I have tried that already. Tried starting with and without the battery, held the button down for at least 30 secs, and nothing. Here's something I'm not sure I mentioned - green light on power pack comes on when I plug it into the wall. Stays on when I plug it into computer. As soon as I hit the power button, the light fades out. It won't come back on unless I disconnect from AC."

It looks like the motherboard on the computer might have failed.

However, I would suggest you to use a known good AC Adaptor and check if it works.

Could be both but, I doubt it. Try new power supply or borrow from friends and try it.

SOURCE: Dell Inspiron 1000 notebook won't turn on

The motherboard is bad. This model had a fault where after a while the North Bidge heatsink would break off and short the motherboard distroying it. This problem is something to not fix, it is not worth it, cost more than it is worth.

SOURCE: My Dell inspiron 6000 laptop

If the Dell Diagnostics passes then the issue is in the software part of the computer.. You may have to reinstall the OS inorder to address this issue.. Dell has a default partition on the computer and you can install with the same..
If you have windows vista on the computer then tap F8 when the computer turns on and then you will be able to see the advanced boot options.. Select repair my computer.. In the repair my computer screen select the dell factory image restore...
Your computer will go through the installation and it will be up and running...
If you have windows Xp then you have to turn on the computer and when the dell logo appears you have to simultaneously press control and the F11key.. You will be able to reinstall the OS in this way..

If this option is not available then reinstall using the disc The issue will be fixed

Hi, I have a inspiron 6000. 6 years old but works like a charm. Only problem now is the adapter won't charge [not an adapter issue as it works on other dell laptops]. And after the battery has...

Remove the battery and replace it, test. If this does not work, attempt to power on with the AC adapter plugged in and no battery in the system. If this works, you have a bad battery. If this does not work, watch the light on the ac adapter. If the green light goes out when you press the power button, something more is wrong with the system. Further information is desired. When you press the power button, do any lights on the system light up? Do the fans in the computer turn on? Does it make ANY noise? Finally, if available, it is desirable to try a different and known functional AC adapter.

Dell inspiron 6000 dead when connect power adeptor to laptop the led light on psu goes off is this mother board fault or psu.

If the led on the power supply turns off after connecting it to your laptop, the problem most likely lies with the power supply especially if the machine will run on battery power. This can be tested by

1. Turn the laptop off.

2. Remove the battery and power supply plug.

3. Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to reset the laptop.

4. Replace the power supply plug into the laptop without replacing the battery.

5. If the computer will not start and there are no lights turning on on the laptop the power supply is bad.

6. Replace the battery and attempt to start the machine both with and without the power supply plugged in.

Try to remove the battery and connect the power adapter and the cord only. Making sure that the power adapter has a green light. Then try turning on your laptop. If it fails then the power adapter is broken, you are going to need a new one, exact model of the power adapter. In any case, you can always recover your files by removing the hard drive from your laptop and insertng it to an external casing so that it will be an external hard drive. By this, you can connect this to another computer thru usb connection where you can back up your important files.

the battery has reached its expected life, you need to replace it. If it is under warranty, you can call dell and have them replace it. You can still use you laptop with the wall power/charger plugged in, remove the battery to get rid of the flashing red/green light.

Inspiron Battery Light Flashing Orange

Battery.

Dell has a chip internal to the battery programed to shut down after a certain number of charge cycles. This means every time you plug the laptop in with the battery installed. When it reaches this determined number the battery effectively shuts down, even though technically it's still good. There have been loads of complaints on the net toward Dell over this issue. I have myself experience this. Battery good one day, powered down, went home, powered up... only to receive the deadly flashing light. Only cure is to replace battery. Several hacks trying to get around this but they're all horrible. Bad Dell - bad, bad Dell!

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop computer and I'm experiencing a problem with the orange battery light flickering continuouslyl; though the green battery light is displayed. Thank you

I think you may be referring to the green power light and the orange hard drive activity light.you should have a power icon located on the bottom bar on the desktop near the clock that indicates battery power.

Power issue

Is the new power supply a Dell. Some aftermarket power supplies, especially Targus, will not charge the battery in a Dell. If it is a Dell supply, then it's one of two things. 1- the battery is shot and needs replacing. 2- the power management chip on the motherboard is shot and the motherboard needs replacing. If the battery light is flashing orange then the battery is shot. If the battery light is green, then go into the power settings and see if the machine shows that it is charging. If it doesn't show that it's charging then it's the pm chip.
