The switch controls card protection. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is currently in the lock position, then moving it may solve the problem.

The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Check that the write-protect switch is down (thats toward the contacts) and that the card is formatted in the camera. If you did this before, then do it again to see if the camera recognizes the card. If you still have a problem then check with a second card (need only be a cheap/small one) to eliminate the possibility of a faulty card.

This error message indicates that the memory card is locked. The switch on the memory card is in the write-protect position. Reset the switch as shown on the camera screen.
