Hello Jim;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

If you are getting cooling and not freezing your problem is not your overload relay or capacitor, otherwise you would get no cooling at all.

You have one of 4 potential problems.

1.) Frozen Drain - This is a common problem. Your unit goes through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours, everything shuts down for about 20-30 minutes. This is when your defrost heater turns on and defrost your cooling (evaporator) coil. If your drain is frozen, a wall of ice builds up behind your lower back wall. This prevents the cooling fan from running and air flow through the cooling coils.

You need to remove the lower back cover to see what is going on. there are several screws holding it on. First remove the rubber seals on both sides. They just pull out.

If it is a block of ice, use a hair dryer to melt the ice and clear the drain. Do not try to chip away, you will damage the coils.

2.) If you observe the cooling coil fan not running and vibrating, then you need to replace the fan.

not freezing - not-freezing-q5gyx04vmzg44gwribm3t5si-2-0.jpg Part Number: Substitution: 3-60336-001 Cost from Sears: $115.00. You can search the internet and get this part for about $80.00.

3.) Defrost Heater - You may have a bad defrost heater. Observe, is the glass tube black or is the wire inside broken?
Part Number: Substitution: 3-80405-003 Cost: $40.00

4.) Refrigerant leak or obstruction - If you observe a block of ice in the upper right hand corner of your cooling coil, then you either have a leak or an obstruction. A repair of this nature with a service company is about $500.00.

5.) Bad Bi-Metl (Thermostat) - In the upper right corner is your cooling coil thermostat.

Part Number: Substitution: 1-81801-001 Cost: $30.00

If you observe the flat back has popped open, then replace.

Check to see if the evaporator fan is running. If not, that is your problem. If it is running, it is likely frozen up due to a bad defrost system. Next possibility is the freezer is about to meet its death.

SOURCE: modle evl201nxrq00 not cold enought to freeze food

I need you to feel the top of the compressor and tell me how hot it is. Also tell me if the condenser fan next to the compressor is running. If the top of the compressor is too hot to keep your hand on top the problem may be the=> 4356738 Start Relay also found here=> 4356738 Start Relay Here is a link to the repair parts list=> EVL201NXRQ00 Repair Parts List You can see the parts listed on page 5 and 6 of the above parts list. Hopefully this is the only problem causing your freezer to stop freezing as well. If the 4356738 Start Relay is defective it will cause the problems by not allowing the compressor to run or start very well also cause the top of the compressor to overheat. You may also need to change the=> 8210224 Capacitor also found here=> 8210224 Capacitor And the=> 2-34286-021 Overload also found here=> 2-34286-021 Overload Feel the top of the compressor first and let me know the results and we will go from there, Thanks Sea Breeze

My frigidaire upright freezer has been working fine until about 2 weeks ago. Now pizzas aren't freezing and freezer corn is soft and i put a ham in it and that was a week ago and it is not froze.

There should be a temperature adjustment inside the freezer somewhere. It will look like a slider or a dial, and be labeled something like "Colder" and "Less Cold" on opposite ends of the scale. If this is set to its coldest setting, and the temperature still is not cold enough to solidly freeze food (ideally, a freezer's temperature should reach ZERO degrees Fahrenheit), then the unit needs to be serviced by an appliance repairman.

Top shelves in freezer not freezing food. Also no ice from ice maker. Seems cold air has stopped coming out of top vent

We had the same problem with our refrigerator just yesterday. Defrosting (even tho frost-free) cleared up the airflow problem-- If it's frost-free, when it defrosts enough to allow air flow, the automatic defrost can take over. Cause was stored food blocking the vent between the freezer and lower part of fridge.

Feel top of the compressor and tell me how hot after it has been running awhile. I need also that you advance the defrost timer=>. 216517400 Defrost Timer

clockwise slowly untill the compressor stops or starts. I need to make sure the timer is not stuck into defrost. I want you to leave the compressor off for up to 35 minutes. If the freezer compressor doesn't restart bt then simply again turn the timer clockwise slowly until it does and then stop turning. The defrost timer is location 23 in this photo HERE If you need to turn the defrost timer like this to restart the compressor then replace the defrost timer and this will resolve the freezing problem. If not we move to the defrost heater location 14 in the sme photo=> 216254600 Defrost Heater

I have a GE GTS 221C fridge/freezer. The fridge is working fine. All of a sudden, the freezer is not freezing. Just cold, but not enough to keep food frozen. The fan on the freezer is working.

remove the rear cover inside the freezer if it has a lot of frost on it,then the evaporator coil is frozen up and you cant blow cold air over or thru a solid block of ice, defrost it,then check the defrost heating element, defrost thermostat and timer or defrost circuitry for no power or defective components, you can use a hand held hair dryer to defrost it quicker
