most newer tvs require the remote for most other functions than source-volume and channel selection, if its stuck on mute you may try unplugging the TV for a few hours or days to see if defaults try pressing the power button on the tv and holding it while its unplugged, this resets some models, your best bet is to program a universal remote or a cable/satellite tv remote with your TV model, otherwise get used to Lip reading !!!!!
Well, without knowing the exact model of tv and remote, I can just give my best guess. Try using the volume up/down on the TV and / or the remote. On the TV, try pressing both the volume up and down at the same time. Stick the remote right in the face of the TV (direct in front of the remote sensor) and hit the mute button. Try tapping the mute button in very short single bursts rather than pressing it for a half second like you would any other button. If any of those work, please come back and reply with the model of the TV and remote, because someone somewhere probably has the same issue and would love to have it solved!
* Point it at a TV set and press the Mute/Power button. (Mute button if
TV is already on, or Power button if the TV hasnt already been turned on)
* Keep pointing it at the TV until the TV turns on or muted, most TVs respond in about
5 seconds, the most is up to 20 seconds. (Other universal television remote you find in
stores take minutes to program and enter long confusing codes)
* Once the TV is muted or turns on, simply let go of button and you have total
control. You can use the remote as if you had the original remote, and responds instantly. ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM of choices
with our remote!
Most remote controls require minutes of programming a universal remote code
into each television while you read the confusing instruction manual.
I came across this looking for a similar solution for my Samsung TV, and I found the solution on ehow.com. Apparently after you program the remote for your TV you have to hold mute and select again until it flashes twice then put in 960 to make the remote control TV input too. Note you're remote should be in TV mode while you do this. It seems silly that the DirectTV guy wouldn't do this when programming the remote.
Could be a contact piece of the MUTE button from your remote that is causing it. Go out and Big Lots or Radio Shack to get a cheap universal remote control(big lots would be between $5-$10) Pick up the code for it,and when the tv happens again, your the OLD remote MUTE button to turn it back on and then put away this remote control and use the new universal remote control. However,if the problem is coming from the manual MUTE button on the TV,you need a repair tech, to fix it! solutiondoct
