Steering wheel not centered

My mechanic replaced a bad spring and now the steering wheel points to 11 o'clock when the car is pointed straight. He told me the wheel could only go back in one way and does not understand why it's not straight.

Nothing in the suspension or steering was touched during this repair. I watched it.

What are my options?

I'm a mechanic and have pulled alot of steering wheels off. There are several groves on the shaft that the steering wheel fits over allowing it to be put on in several different spots. There is no way it was put on in the right spot. Take it back and tell him it wasn't like that before and he needs to remove it and set it back on straight. If they won't do it then tell them you will take it to another shop and post reviews on line about there service.

SOURCE: Car jerks to left w/no warning

My opinion, not a good car. But that is a different story. It would be easiest to bring the car in for an alignment. The technician will tell you what the car needs to do the alignment. But if you want to do it yourself then you will need to inspect all the steering componants (tie-rods,struts, lower ball joint, wheel bearings, brakes, wheels, tire wear, tread pattern, and tire pressure, and lug nuts (loose or overtightened). Good luck.

Renault Clio 2013 horn works only if turned

bingo , first ever post with such a good test (ding ding !)
the steering clock spring contacts are bad.

that is the problem. (issues are pet stains)
now cure is new clock spring assembly.
how to fix it is covered in the service manual
Generic:
  1. disable air bags SRS.
  2. pull off bag from center of steering wheel.
  3. pull off steering wheel. spec tools. *(called puller)
  4. remove clock spring and replace it.
  5. reverse order to finish up.

no Renault's in USA so no books to share here. 2013 zero.
last one here 1987 , long long gone and forgotten.

How do i remove the steering column?

You will need to disconnect the steering shaft from the rack on the engine side of the firewall, make sure the wheels are pointed straight ahead to make it easier for replacement. You will need to disable the air bag system and make sure the column is locked before taking anything loose, too many revolutions of the steering wheel will ruin the clock spring. Take the lower trim off from under the dash and unbolt the column. Remove any electrical connectors and the shift linkage and shifter/ brake interlock. That should about do it.

I have a 2001 dodge durango. the horn works when i set the alarm but does not work from the steering wheel at all.

The horn has power all of the time but does not go off untill it is grounded. The switch in the steering wheel is the ground when you press it completing the circuit and sounding the horn. The alarm does not use the steering column or steering wheel ground path to "beep" the horn, it uses its own ground. The problem then will more than likely be in the steering column, steering wheel switches, or clock-spring. The clock spring is not for the clock. It is a spiral-wound wire set that allows the steering wheel to turn and not bind up the wires going into the steering wheel. It is called a clock-spring due to the "spiral" wound design of the connector. The horn ground wire in the steering wheel gets its connection through this clock-spring, so it may the source of your problem. It would require some electrical diagnostics to verify the actual point of failure.

Follow correct procedure. You must do so, or you could trigger the air bag. First, take off the negative battery terminal. Wait 15 minutes for the residual charge to disappear-there is a back-up power supply. Point the wheels straight ahead, steering wheel centered, and turn the key to the lock position.
Two bolts hold the airbag module, hidden under small covers on each side of the wheel. Unscrew the bolts and lift off the module, and disconnect the module's electrical connectors. Also any other electrical connectors for wheel removal. When handling the module carry with trim side pointed away from you. Set the module down in a safe place with the trim side facing up.
Remove wheel retaining bolt and pull the wheel off. If stuck, use a 2 jaw puller to remove. Careful not to damage the screw threads on the steering shaft. If no marks exist on the wheel and steering shaft, you must mark it for placing the wheel back on the same position. Now you can work on the switch. Warning: with wheel removed, do NOT turn the steering shaft, or the clock spring will not be centered. This will make the air bag inoperative when you have it back together. If the clock spring must be removed, post back- there is a procedure for centering the clock spring, also for its removal. The reason to have the ignition key in lock is to prevent the steering shaft from turning.

I have a 2004 malibu--the horn works some times--maybe when I turn the corner, on the highway going straight--it will not work--took to firestone, they want to charge me 300.00 for a part--do you know why ...

whith the engine running and the vehicle parked bush on the steering wheel to activate the horn while rotating the steering wheel at the same time. If the horn beeps at certain points in the steering wheels rotation than either the clock spring has gone bad or the horn contact button has gone bad in the multi-function switch.

My horn stopped working and I narrowed it dow to the clock spring contact. How do I change it?

The only way to remove a clock spring assembly is to remove the steering wheel. Of course, if your vehicle has an airbag system (SRS) you'll need to unscrew it from the back and disconnect that first. If you don't have a steering wheel puller, you're going to need one, as this will make the job a LOT easier! You'll be able to borrow one from a "Loan a Tool" program such as at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts. Next, make a "timing mark" on the shaft and the inside of the steering wheel so that it's assembled and centered the same as when you removed it. Start with the steering wheel in the centered position when you make your timing mark for better ease of the operation. Once the steering wheel is removed, disconnection and replacement of the clock spring assembly is pretty self-explanatory. Just look for the attaching screws, remove them, and disconnect it from the harness. Use the new clock spring assembly as a good reference point.

I hope this helps! :)

The "clock spring" is a slang term used to describe the round electrical contact below the steering wheel inside the steering column, that transfers the switch contacts in the steering wheel to the actual vehicle. Your problem is more than likely the bearing in the top half of the steering column. Disconnect the battery and remove the air bag and steering wheel nut, steering wheel, and electrical switches, then look at the mechanical bearings or bushings at the steering shaft and case unit, the problem should be visible at this point. Hope this helps, let me know.

Horn not working due to clock spring

The part is still available from GM. It is part # 94857236.

You must be careful when replacing the clock spring as it controls the SRS system.
You will need to remove the steering wheel airbag and and the steering wheel itself.

Important: Perform this procedure in order to prevent deployment of the air bags from the reserve energy supply power.

  1. Remove the CIG and IGN Fuses from the junction block (1), which is located near the base of the steering column.
  2. Remove the lower steering column trim cover.
  3. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  4. Remove the key from the ignition switch
  5. Release the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil connector locking mechanism.
  6. Disconnect the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil connector C3
  7. Remove the Instrument Panel (IP) compartment (2)
  8. Release then unlock the IP module connector (1).
  9. Disconnect the IP module pigtail.
  10. Release and unlock the driver and passenger seat module connectors.
