Hi there
660T worked beautifully for ca. 2 years all over Europe. I then updated sys software from Garmin site, shortly after this (but possibly unrelated), it began to hang up completely after about 40mins use. It was on, was fully-charged and connected to power, display frozen, touchscreen inactive and nothing happening. If reset, the same hang up occured at say 20mins later, reset then 10 minutes later, and so on until I might get 2 minutes If lucky before freezing after reset. If I then leave it turned off for a long time I'll again get the 40 mins before freeze up etc as above. Sys softare is most current and I also paid for new mapping few weeks back - which I effectively can't use - had hoped installing this might help - it didn't - and cost me. Very annoyed with zero response from Garmin (probably Garmin-UK).
Can anyone email me the original sys software perhaps, might make this problem go away - it worked fine for me before. Other ideas?
Thanks
Martin.
Nuvi 660 stopped tracking satellite
Hi Martin,
It sounds like a corrupted firmware update. Please go to this site:
http://gpsinformation.org/perry/nuvi/
I believe the latest firmware version for a 660 is v4.7. You can try reflashing the firmware with v4.7 or trying an earlier version. Let me know if this resolves your issue.
Also, the Nuvi can lag if you have large picture files on an inserted SD card.

Hi Martin,
Always make sure you select to "safely remove" the Nuvi before pulling out the data cable. You should see that the Nuvi drive is removed from your PC's directory. Also, never turn off the unit while it's rebooting and loading the new firmware and make sure your battery is charged before doing any upgrades.
Good idea on downloading the previous versions. Sounds beautiful there! Would love to visit there! There is a comedian that hosts a late nite show here in the USA. His name is Craig Ferguson and he's originally from Scotland. His humor is often risque, but he is hillarious to watch. :)
Safe travels!

Martin,
When you upgrade the firmware, a file called GUPDATE.GCD is added into the garmin directory. When you reboot, the contents of this file is then flashed into the GPS's non-volatile memory. Once you have rebooted, you can erase this file as its no longer needed.

Thanks Jim
I have V4.7 on it according to the sys info screen, but may have been corrupted I suppose. Will try reflash as you suggest. May take some time to figure out if it has worked though, I'm not driving the required ca. 40 continuous mins every day to see if it hangs-up or not. Could head off to hills tomorrow I guess and find out. Just in case, I downloaded a pile of previous versions from site. Will update you as and when. Bit of snow and brilliant sunshine in East Scotland today, thanks again from hereabouts then, regards
Martin.
Question, is there a link somewhere that will tell me what each of the file types on the nuvi internal memory actually are?
I simply went through the install procedure as normal with 4.7 (for the third time actually). I'd feel safer removing previous versions somehow. It's not clear to me if running the installer removes old stuff or modifies it (I suspect the latter - as there seems to be some sort of update file in there). If I did want to install older version, would the old install over the newer ... ? I'm not sure. I'd like to do a "clean install" if at all possible and wipe the current stuff entirely. (Other than the mapping and key evidently).
Haven't driven far enough to test the latest 4.7 attempt yet!
Cheers
Martin.
Ok, sorry to take so long getting back to you guys - you're not forgotten. The problem is now solved. The most recent software is definitely to blame. Lost count of how many times I reinstalled V4.7 to make sure installation was ok. The 660 always developed this freezing nuisance when using version 4.7.
As soon as I reverted to version 4.6 the problem went away entirely. Since then device has worked perfectly, including a long trip of ca. 1500 miles - without so much as a single glitch.
Many thanks for help in finding previous s/w versions.
Cheers
Martin.
