Is it a good idea to buy a second-hande Elna sewing machine 6003 model?

It is not a Elna Qulter's Dream - only a Elna 6003. I want to buy it from the sewingmachinelady - and it looks as if she has a good name in the industry. My problem is, that I am not sure that it is a good machine, because it is not sold any more at the Elna agency here in South Africa. According to them it is a very old model.

Besides being a old model, you also must think about getting
parts for the machine if that becomes neccessary.
and sometimes parts are hard to come by and some times there
are no parts.
it would be a better idea to get a newer model sewing machine, one
that is being sold by the elna agency in Africa, that way there
should be a better chance of getting parts.

SOURCE: step motor error

I am working on a 6003Q right now with this exact problem. The shuddering sound is the stepper motor working, but hitting the movement limit stop. The reason it keeps trying to move is that the sensor has failed. In the case of the machine I am working on, it is the zig-zag stepper motor position sensor that has failed. Elna does not sell the sensor separately, it comes complete with stepper motor, mounting frame, and cable, which is a shame because it is approx. $70 dealer cost for the assembly. The sensor is nothing more than an LED as a "sender" with a corresponding "receiver". There is a blade on the stepper motor drive gear that passes between the two and breaks the beam signaling that the "home" position has been reached. Unfortunately, the sender-receiver pair are sealed in a plastic housing so they are not replaceable. The part number of the zig-zag stepper motor assembly is 395727-69.

Best of luck,
Rick

SOURCE: how do I raise the feeder feet

There is a slide switch on the underside of the back of the free-arm. The feed dogs will not immediately raise when you slide it, the machine must make a full rotation for it to engage.

SOURCE: Elna 6003 quilters dream isn't sewing properly.

This is the only one I could find and it is $10.00 http://www.mcssl.com/SecureCart/ViewCart.aspx?mid=F506721D-3C9E-481E-8B3F-7E1C3114072F&sctoken=0465a6a54d8e482581a12d868a00a3fb&bhcp=1

The reason for the jam could be the fabric is thick and this causes the foot to raise to the point the the tension is open that the top thread is feeding erratically.

Another could be the bobbin area needs to be cleaned.

Lastly, it could be the timing needs to be adjusted and this means a trip to the sewing machine dealer for service.

Is it a good idea to buy a second hand Elna 6003 from a reputable seller?

Elna machines are good machines. If the machine is working, you will probably need to get it serviced, if it hasn't been already. So keep that cost in mind, in addition to the cost of the machine itself.

MY MACHINE SHOWS A STEP MOTOR FAULT-ZIG ZAG--IT IS A 6003. If the parts are available-can my hubby fix it -he is good with his hands ?

here is a link to the service manual for the 6003 http://www.arizonaexpressionz.com/elna_service/6003_service_manual.pdf - these manuals are written for trained technicians but it might give your husband an idea of what is involved before he decides whether he would tackle the repair.

If you are in the USA then you might be able to source parts from www.sewusa.com, www.sewingpartsonline.com or a local Elna dealer.

I've always been happy to take my Elna to my OSMG (Old sewing machine guy) Ken as he's worked on Elnas for 25 years and I appreciate his knowlege and experience with them.

Elna 6003 just stopped working

Something caught inside the machine and jammed the mechanism. It blew a fuse to protect the circuit board. A competent Elna or Janome Dealer should be able to get you machine going in no time.I don't know of any reason to have trouble finding parts for this machine.
