The Apple iPod shuffle is a digital music player that contains a single indicator light that relays information about the device's battery condition, computer connection and any errors the device is having. The indicator light is capable of blinking red, green or orange as well as displaying a steady red, green or orange light. First off, there are a number of different functions that are denoted by different color sequences, so flashing green might mean one thing when you're listening to music, and something else entirely when it's plugged in and charging or syncing with your PC.

The primary functions are powering on, charging, syncing, and general feedback. Let's look at each.

When you turn on your ipod shuffle, the light will indicate your current charge level:

green = 30-100% charge, you're good to cruise
orange = 10-30% charge, low, but still good for a short workout
red = less than 10% charge, time to plug it in
no light = too late, you've run out of juice

If you see an alternating pattern of green-orange-orange then your Shuffle's crashed or otherwise needs to be restored. Needless to say, that's not a good thing, but probably easy to fix when you hook it up to your PC or Mac.

When you're charging up your shuffle, there are three possible light states:

orange = charging

If your player flashes alternating green and orange, you have no music in the shuffle. This can be because it's fresh out of the box, or because, well, something's happened and the music has vanished. Either way, time to sync with your iTunes library.

Green and ORANGE? orange indicates the iPod is searching for music.
UNDERSTAND this- when you play music in the iTunes app., you are hearing the music in your computer not the iPod.
1) Install the latest iTunes application.
2) Do a restore
3) sync your iPod

Make sure that you plug your ipod into a high power usb port. Also some computers won't charge it if the comp is in sleep mode.Try using the usb on the back of the tower. The indicator light will be a steady green if it is charged. Also make sure you haven't disabled the ipods buttons.

The orange light blinks to tell you that it connecting to the computer and is syncing (or trying to sync). It will stay orange until it is fully charged and it will then turn green. If it is blinking orange, then open it using itunes and see what it is syncing. If you have not got itunes then i recommend you download that latest version from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
then once you have installed it onto your computer, add your music to itunes and create a playlist that you want on your ipod. Itunes will have the drivers for you ipod. Plug your ipod into the computer and right click the image of your ipod and select sync ipod. Then choose the playlist that you want the ipod to sync with.

I bought an Ipod shuffle 2nd generation yesterday, it charged all night and orange light was still blinking. Tried listening to songs and sometimes it would play but most times wouldn't. Took it back for exchange and same problem. Then I realized the problem is not with the USB plug or computer reoconizing ipod but in the docking itself. I applied pressure on the top side of docked Ipod and bottom of docking station and the computer recognized the Ipod. Release pressure and lose connection. The problem is that the docking station and earbuds do not connect with ipod and the fixes provided by apple doesn't address or fix this problem.

Use iTunes to add songs to iPod shuffle and try again If your iPod shuffle continues to display a blinking orange and green light, use iPod Updater 2005-02-11 or later to restore iPod shuffle, and then add songs with iTunes.
