At what stage of the installation process do you get the message ?
Which operating system are you trying to load ?
Is there an operating system on your hard drive ?

You have to format your hard drive using a third party disc to erase everything on your hard drive

Restart your computer during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or F2 key

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

Note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

Note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults after windows has loaded

your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation
the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd

Hope this helps.

How do i restore my hp hdx18 to factory install settings? completely wipe it

Turn the computer off.
Turn the computer on, and look for a message like "press BLAH to enter System Recovery".
When you see the message, press the BLAH key.
This will start a complete "restore-to-factory" install of Windows.

Or, if you have a set of "System Recovery" CD/DVD disks from HP, then insert the 1st disk,
restart your computer, and select to boot your computer from the CD/DVD drive.

Or, there may be software already on your computer that lets you "burn" a set of "System Recovery" CD/DVD disks -- have 10 CD-R disks, and 5 DVD-R disks -- you may need to use most of these "blank" disks.

Windows XP SP2 Repair

Solution: Rename the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 folder to something such as catold to prevent WinXP's Setup program from locating the folder and halting the installation. If you are still in Setup, press SHIFT-F10 to launch a command prompt from within Setup. At the command prompt, type cd\win dows\System32 to open the System32 folder and then type rename CATROOT2 catold, press ENTER, restart the computer, and attempt the upgrade again.

If you cannot reach a command prompt from Setup, reboot the computer from a Win95, Win98, or WinMe startup disk and rename the folder from the command prompt. You can also launch a command prompt by booting from the WinXP installation CD and running the Recovery Console.
