In the manual it says the DVR will shut down after 3 hours of inactivity . The DVR should put up a message to " press enter " to reset .

DVD unit says, disc is empty, with all DVDs inserted. DVDs are correct region and correct type, and they playback fine in other DVD units. I have already reset the unit per the Toshiba tech support site. I...

First, insert the DVD into the recorder.
Then, try double-click on OPEN/CLOSE button on the remote control. You have to make it very quick - two quick clicks on the same button. If done correctly, you will first see OPEN, then CLOSE in the right corner of the screen.
When done successfully, the unit will recognize the DVD again (if the burner has not failed totally.)

I tried that with RD-XS55 (it has the same DVD-RAM drive as RD-XS35.) It is not perfect solution, but it might help temporarily. In my situation, it bring my dvd drive back to "life," so I do not need to do double-click all the time.

Let's face it, your burner is dying whether you like it or not. And new replacement would cost you around $200.

I search owner manual forRD-XS35 and remote SE-RO144

Click Toshiba Support to download instruction manual of RD-XS35, file size is approx 11MB and will take time to download.

SE-RO144 seems incorrect / incomplete model number.

TV Guide will not update

The problem is not with your machine. TVGOS information is embeded in part of the a PBS analog signal. With the covnversion to digital, some PBS stations are not sending this data out anymore. Also, some cable companies are not converting the digital signals to be sent out on the old 125 analog channels.

If you try to chase this down with the Cable Companies or PBS techs, you will get; blank stares, help desk happy voices, it's not our problem, we don't support TVGOS, etc.

Personally, I think that the digital transition has killed TVGOS. It ain't comin bak, no more, no more.

Start looking for a replacement DVR that is easy to program.

No, wait, try to find one! Blue Ray along with Cable Company & Dish Network, etc. DVR's have killed the market for a stand-alone DVR's.

But there s always TIVO $$$

Toshiba RD-XS35 DVD Recorder

Toshiba tech support for this one. If it is not accepting the cleaner disk - you have to wonder if something is already intere or do you mean will not rune the disk? Inwhich case it is a drive failure and needs replacement[of drive if available] or whole machine. Contact Toshiba first though it may be a known issue.
