We just purchased an older model (wooden sides) Magnavox Star PIP model # RK8536AK01. It worked fine the first few days we had it and then the screen went black but the power light was still on. So we shut the tv off and tried to turn it on again and all we get is the black screen and a green power light. So we left it shut off for a few hours and tried again. The Tv turned on and we watched a movie for about 15 to 20 minutes and then the screen went black again. Could it be a resistor doing this or something else? If it is a resistor could we fix it or do we need to have a repairman do it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
We have a Magnavox 27inch 27MS304-17 We are having the same problem but this tv has a shipping date of 2004 so it is not all that old. Also it is not turning it self off if it is already on a black screen and if you change the channel when it shuts it self off it comes back for a few seconds. Any idea what could be causing this?

Re:
Intermitant problems on old TV's are almost always poor solder connections. If you have done some soldering before you may be able to repair yourself, if not i wouldn't try to learn on this. Begin by gently tapping components on the circuit boards while the TV is on good chance you will tap an area and it will shut right off. make sure you are using something insulated and non-metalic. if you find a spot that is especially sensitive get to the bottom of that circuit board and begin soldering. this is probably the most likely cause but there are other possibilities. If you attempt this do be very carefull. My honest suggestion is to have a pro do it, if it just solder work it shouldnt cost that much maybe around a 100 to 150 if you can take it in somewhere.

It may not be cost effective, if it is indeed manufactured in 1990. If repaired, there are more than likely other problems lurking inside. They may not appear for for thirty days and then it may quit on you. Many TV repairs are warranted for about 30 days. On another note..you may have an open coil or a bad horizontal ground near the flyback transformer. And or a bad vertical circuit. This case would be a gamble, but you decide!
I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.
Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV
up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors.
Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although
were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of
preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected
due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.
If you have any of the following problems you may want to check the site www.TvRepairKits.com for a repair kit. Most of the issue below are fairly common with the older Magnavox projection sets. Symptom: Screen shrinks and expands - may or may not correct itself after the TV warms up. After a few days, weeks, or months of having the shrinking/expanding problem you may loose all audio/video but the power light will remain lit!
Symptom: No Audio or Video but power light is on
Symptom: Audio works but no Video. Power light still work
Symptom: No Video. Audio is intermittent. Power light still works

Sounds to me like you need a new control panel board which should run you about $150-$200 max! might be semi burnt out like mine was and that is what i had to pay not sure if this helps but hey ya never know :)
