Sounds like classic symptoms of capacitor failure.
Old thread, but in case anyone else is still looking for an answer, the problem is probably bad capacitors on the power board. There was a world-wide problem with capacitors in the early 2000's that affected all kinds of electronics. For a good summary/review see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague .
Make sure the replacement capacitors are the proper size, specs (volts (v) & micro-farads (mf)) and temperature rated for 105°C. Make sure to install them in the proper orientation, they have a positive (+) and negative (-) terminal. I had 3 bad ones but replaced them all. It's actually quite simple and cheap if you have basic soldering skills. If you're not sure, research soldering technique and safety. Be Safe Out There.

If this happens before you turn your computer on, then your monitor is automatically saving power. Just turn your computer (the big box) on before the monitor, and it'll be fine.
If this happens after you turn your computer on, you have a power problem. You can either get it fixed, or my recommendation would be getting it replaced.

this is caused by a bad connection, or a faulty back light. It is also something you should have a local repair man have do for you if you are not "tech savvy".

VERY Dim screen after a drop

Have you tested it with an external monitor?

I would say you either have a damaged inverter board or screen baclight lamp. Usually the inverter board fails in one of the following ways:

1. When you turn on the laptop, the screen lights up for a short period of time and then goes dark. You still can see an image but it is very dark, almost invisible and definitely not usable. When you restart the laptop, the screen lights up and then goes dark again. The laptop works fine with an external monitor.
2. Your laptop turns on but the screen remains dark all the time. You still can see a very dim image outline. The laptop works fine with an external monitor.
3. The laptop screen works fine for hours or even days, but sometimes it goes very dark as it mentioned above. When you restart the laptop, the screen works fine again.

Inverter failure symptoms are very similar to backlight lamp failure symptoms and in most cases you cannot tell which one is causing the problem until you replace either the inverter board or the backlight lamp. From my personal experience, inverter boards fail more often than backlight lamps. If you have to guess, replace the inverter first.

Dell ADAMO 13 w/Vista 64 Random power failure...goes dead in 1 second. Battery fully charged. Happened with external power and when on battery. I have latest BIOS v6.0. I ran pre-boot diagnostics...

If the power totally fails (i.e. power is cut off, LEDs turn off, fans stop, ... etc), then this more likely to be because of a short circuit developing in a failing semiconductor component, or a power supply problem.
However, if the laptop is still running & only the display on its LCD is cut off but the laptop itself stays powered on, then your laptop might be experiencing a failing screen inverter board, a failing screen backlight lamp, or a failing LCD screen cable.
