Tv doesnt complete power on, shuts itself down 3 times

I have a GE 56 inch rear projection that I bought in 1999. This is the first problem I have had with it. While I was out, My daughter said that the picture on the tv flickered a few times, then the tv shut off. I came home, and tried to turn it on. It tried to power up, but shut itself off, then did the same 3 times. The screen stays black. I have found that this may be a power current problem. What do you suggest? Ive also found that this problem is hard to find. I hate calling a repair guy, as I fix most everthing myself around here. But, Ill do what I have to, I suppose. Any help is welcome, and very much appreciated.

the 3 start attempts in the tv indicate a horizontal shut down fault. if you have repair knowledg, the most likely thing is the capacitors in the horizontal circuit, check those. then check diodes. if the tv still does not work then you have a bad high viltage transformer or a bad hight voltage splitter. further testing becoms dangerous to do at home due to the high voltage. if the caps are bad the typically run around $4- 12 each, h.v. parts $75 to $125. each + you local shop rates.
    good luck.

Thank You so much repairguy. I just got some more details from my daughter about right before the tv quit. She says the picture on the screen made distorted oval shapes all over the screen, And there was noise, like crackling. Then it just went off. I hope this is also helpful to what is wrong, and how to fix it.

The TV is powering on intermittingly. It may turn on (and show a picture) for two minutes then it shuts itself off. The green power light will then come on and off (without showing a picture) for 2-5 seconds before it just doesn't do anything at all. The TV is only 3 years old and my husband is beside himself. Is there anything we can try at home before we call a repairman? As a side note we have this TV along with our Direct TV receiver all plugged in to a surge protector.

Thanks for the great help! I was wondering where physically the horizontal circuit is inside the tv. I have limited repair experience, and I need to locate the circuit first then I can replace the caps.. Thanks...

How to transport a 56 inch general electric projector tv

I transport them all the time and the best way to do it is to put something down soft in the bed of a truck then lay it down screen first on its face. If you stand it up in the bed of a truck the wind usually destroys the screen. laying them down face first doesnt harm them as long as you have somehing soft to lay it on so the screen doesnt get scratched.

What kind of heat issue would my 56 inch projection tv have if after a couple hours shut off and on then then turns off . fuse, power supply . not sure

Sounds like it's possibly your convergence IC's overheating. On some projection tv's, after time, the solder joints on the IC's weaken from the heat and cause them to turn off the tv for it's own protection.

I have a 56 inch rca rear projection tv and after two hours starts turning of and on for about half hour and then turns off. when we turn it back on it shuts off and comes on fast and then shuts off....

Those type of tv sets get unusually hot at times. Could be a heat issue. Power flow at night is the best. If it's still turning off then, it must be a dust or heat issue.

TV will not power up. Only 3 red blinks on bottom left of unit... Help?

The convergence chips have shorted out causing the TV to shut down. This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

My 56 inch tv shut itself off and will not turn back on, all 3 light lower right are blinking, any answers?

You need to change the lamp. This tele doesn't have a color wheel so that leaves the lamp or the power board. Try the lamp first, it is the most likely problem.
