The problem is in the fuel sender unit in the tank. It sounds like the float part of the sender unit is binding when it's at the top (when tank is full) and hangs up there till it falls back down when tank is near empty. It will likely have to come out to be checked, fixed, or replaced. Good luck.

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

did you recently change the fuel pump? If so you needed to change the wire harness thats attached to the fuel pump, then if not, your floater need to be replaced inside your fuel tank.
How do I know? from experience.

there is a sending unit in the gas tank, just a float attached to an arm moving a variable resistor. you need to pull the tank and replace it. given the age of the car and the labor required, you should also replace the fuel pump while you are in there if that year had the pump inside the tank. i would also call around to fabrication/machine shops and see if any of them can flush the tank. you would be surprised at what accumulates in there over the years.

I had engine work done on my 2001 GMC sonoma 2WD. My gas gauge always worked fine. When I got it back and start it up it goes to full then after about 10 seconds shows empty and fuel light comes on.

As with many Chevy products, the fuel pump has the fuel level sending unit all-in-one. Replace the pump. Nothing related to the fuel gauge in the engine compartment.

Remove the fuel tank, and the pump is on the top side. Do not use cheap replacement from OReilly's or AutoZone...only use NAPA or OEM Chevy part.

Low fuel light flashing

Most likely just a faulty ground connection. When something electrical goes wrong, always check the ground FIRST. You already know the gauge itself is working, because it will move on it's own. It has to be grounded well in order for the sending unit in the tank to show proper reading. If all grounds are good, it would be a faulty sending unit in the tank. Best to check ALL connections.

2003 Chevy S10 had fuel pump replaced. When fuel gauge shows slightly below half, the gauge falls to empty and low fuel lights blinks. What could be causing this?

hi,

sounds like the sending unit rheostat(sending unit) has a bad contact or break in the resistance wire. inside the tank theres a float attached to an arm that goes to a small rheostat, like a volume control on a stereo. the rheostat is sending a scratchy signal or no signal to the computer and your getting these readings. that part is inside the gas tank, the part usually comes integrated with the fuel pump. the gas tank has to be lowered to fix it.

this problem is caused by a defective gas tank sending unit, the gas tank must be removed and the fuel level sending unit replaced. and yes I am sorry but it is very expensive to fix.

1989 Saab 900 low level fuel light

You don;t say whether the fuel gauge is reading accurately, or whether it's always on empty. If the gauge is always showing empty, it's most likely a problem with the sending unit in the fuel tank. Check the resistance across the two terminals of the sending unit.

On a C900, the fuel sender level unit is separate from the fuel pump and located on the right side top of the tank, accessible by removing the trunk floor lift up panel (the pump is located on the left side top of the tank.
Possible problems are: electrical line off or broken, float not working (it's fairly delicate); or gauge not working.

Test the resistance of the sending unit with the lines disconnected, the resistance should be 2.6 to 3.8 ohms full tank, 63.3 to 67.5 ohms empty tank; and test for voltage across the top of the sender unit, if no voltage, that's likely the problem!

If the gauge is otherwise reading accurately (showing 'full' for a full tank, etc) then the problem is likely a gauge malfunction and can be simply replaced.

Good luck!
