Hi,

Sorry to hear of your difficulty. Usually in your kind of situation data can easily be recovered using any data recovery software. But my personal suggestion to you is to first try to run a demo version first and if you see directory list of your lost data then only proceed with the purchase.

Sometimes when OS fail to install then file System of your hard drive can go corrupt which can result to invalid disk error.

Regards,

HOW DO I FIND THE ORIGINAL DATA TO PUT BACK ON THE DISK

Try running testdisk - see http://www.rmprepusb.com/tutorials/file_recovery for details - just run it from windows (no need to make a USB boot drive).

I have an IBM ThinkPad 2861that displays "operating system not found" during start up. I downloaded a user manual that wasn't much help in solving the problem. Any advice?

message means there is no working operating system(OS) installed on the harddisk, like windows XP,vista or a lunix version. if you have a working cd-rom, i use a win 98 install cd that boots from startup then install win98 to find out if there are any hardware issues. if the invalid OS was a version that used the NTFS file system the drive will have to be re-formatted/erased to install win98. if you have a bootable cd-rom version of the OS you use or if the factory IBM restore partition is intact you can use them. they may not save any data you have on the drive. if you have data you need to retrive from the disk drive it is a different procedure.

How many times a harddisk can be formatted?

hi,

in a long course of use it is quite natural to format the harddisk...

(due to viruses or something like that)

when formatting,
the operating system needs a file system to organise data into files and folders....
so they can be managed effectively...
when formatting it clears a particular area called a partition then divides it into sectors, tracks formed by the combination of these sectors, and cylinders...

sector is the smallest data block in hard disk an operating system can manage...

if not frequent formatting a hard disk not at all a problem....

you need not worry about the hard disk or its performace....

if this one help please give a vote....

320GB seagate freeagent, cant open some of the files.

If you have the ability and space then recover any files that you can

use the RUN option from the start menu

now type in "cmd" then ENTER

Now in the black box that appears type "chkdsk x: /f /r" and press ENTER

The "x" is the drive letter of the drive you wish to check

It may take some time but this will try fix any errors it comes acrosss and you may have to re-start to complete the task.

Now remove any more files that you can.

Use the RUN command again but this time type "compmgmt.msc"

Select Disk management

Make sure you freeagent is listed here.

Right click and select "Format"

Select NTFS as the file system

Do not tic any other boxes

Click OK

When it is done you can move the files back to this drive.

It is quite possible you hit the limits of the FAT32 file system which would have caused the types of error you saw.

I received the "invalid product key" message. When I do the fix will I lose the files already created. Or i f I do an entire uninstall and reinstall the new valid program, will my files remain? Thanks.

Yes, your data files such as .doc, xls, etc will remain on your harddisk. MS uninstall does not remove your data. They will not open of course while MS Office is unistalled until you reinstall or use a compatible suite of applications.

I am usubg 845 gvrs motherboard now I want to installed extra internal harddisk what will be ideal harddisk and size

The size of the hard disk depends upon what type of programs you are running and the amount of data you need to store.
Programs that create large amount of data are audio and video files.
The tpye of hard drive depends on what type of disk controller you have, it could be IDE or SATA disk controller, you need to check your computer's hard disk controller.
The average hard disk capacity is 160 Gb to 180 Gb and goes up to 1 Tb, but the largest capacity drive your cmputer can support will depend upon the BIOS.

Honestly, this is the best software I've used for file recovery:

It's a bit pricey, but if your data is important, it's worth every penny.

Hope this helps!
