Having trouble holding enough power to even load the apps. Have replaced batteries 3 times with brand new ones and this is product has already been replaced. Is there any reason for this?

It could be one of several things, a system reset, a firmware update but it sounds like a screen cable has become disconnected or similar fault. Before doing anything, is it still under warranty, if so its best to go back to the vendor or leapfrog and request an exchange. Here's the url to their support page.

If the warranty is out of date, then its down to dismantling the pad and looking for ribbon connectors which may have come adrift.
