Gateway FPD 1730 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor Logo

Gateway FPD 1730 (mfg June 2004) On start-up, monitor flashes bios screen for less than half a second, then flashes the Windows XP logo for less than half a second and then stays black, no image. No image can be seen on the screen by using a flashlight held to the screen. Pressing the monitor button off and then back on causes another flash of the desktop for less than half a second before going black. I can make the monitor stay on by pushing the power button off, holding the OCD button in and pushing the power button back on. Once the monitor is on, it works perfectly. No flickering or other display issues. I opened the case, expecting to find bad capacitors but all are clean and have perfectly flat tops. What might cause this and what specifically would I need to replace to repair it. I'm comfortable soldering on the boards but don't want to needlessly replace all the caps if not necessary. Thanks in advance for your time to reply. Ken Ruda LaCrosse, WI

Power light coming on when you plug it in but no lighting of the screen is usually caused by the power inverter board having gone bad. Common on the 17s due to their age is a bad bulb or more.

SOURCE: Gateway FPD 1730 Monitor

What has happened is part of your back lighting circuitry has gone out. Yes it is repairable but can cost most of what a replacement monitor will cost these days. Check that out before spending the money. If the problem is only in the back lighting circuit then expect to spend about $100 for a replacement board.

LCD monitors lifespan depends on the quality. Normal use and you should get 2-3 years of reliable service minimum. The display itself is good for about 4000 or so hours of use or more. The problems that show up are always (well 99.99% of the time) are back lighting problems like you have experienced. You should turn it off by the switch when not using it as every hour it runs the screen save is an hour of usable life. Heat is not good for it so if your computer gets the dust cleaned out to keep it cool do the monitor at the same time. Once a year at least more if you smoke use gas heat and have pets.

Tube monitors have a much longer life but you have the size weight and poorer display to go with them. If you have to go back to a tube monitor don't go back to your 14 ask around and you should be able to get a 17 or 19 crt for free. Or expect to pay no more than $10-20 for one.

SOURCE: same problem 2 seconds on, then turns black

The problem with the monitor is the power inverter board. I took my monitor apart and tested all the power outputs. The ones going to the main board where ok but the ones going to the backlight where different. I changed the three capacitors on the power board that where located between the two heat sinks I think it was the 1000uf and the two 470uf. They looked ok but when i tested them they where off. Next on the opposite side of the board with all the little componites there are a few dry joins that you have to resolder. If you cant find then you can just resolder the whole back board it should only take 30min. If you have no idea what i am talking about i would not sugest taking the monitor apart.

SOURCE: monitor goes dark after a few seconds

it looks like the video driver needs to be chcked. can you try to go to the bios of your omputer by pressing f2 on boot and let it stay there for 5 minutes? if it still goes to a black screen, its either your video card or lcd thats having a problem. but if it doesnt goes to a black screen in bios, its just the video driver. go then to safe mode by pressing f8 on boot. then uninstall and reinstall the video driver. or run system restore. restore it back to a working date thts by clicking start, then click all programs, go to accessories, go to system tools, click system restore, choose an earlier date and hit next, follow the prompts, wait for the computer to restart and that should work!

Monitor flashes on but with 1-3 seconds it goes to balck screen. I've replaced the electrolytic caps in the power supply, but it didn't help

Try different video and/or power cables, but most likely this is dead. Sorry!
If it's still under warranty, (or the computer it came with is), call Gateway support.

Gateway monitor FPD 1730: We have had it since

If the screen is black (ie there isn't any backlight) then the fault maybe the inverter board that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp ot the CCFL lamp is faulty.

Out of Frequency error

1. Start Windows in safe mode by pressing F8 and Change the display properties to 800 x 600 16bit

2. Restart in normal mode

3. If the 800x600 screen resolution doesn't work try going into safe mode and trying a lower resolution

Try using it on a different computer, it's possible that it is your graphics card causing the problem. Check for bent pins.
