You can't actually "stop" the song. The pause really is a "stop". If your looking to exit out of the ipod completely what you need to do is from the home screen.
Double tap the home button (bottom) and a menu will open from the bottom. Then hold your finger or thumb on the ipod logo till it shakes and has red circle with a line through it.
Tap the circle, and that will shut it off.
You can also do that with all the running programs listed, that's the only "app kill" feature the iphone has.
First make sure that your iPod’s hold button isn’t on. This is the little switch at the top left corner of the iPod video that you can move to “lock” the iPod’s buttons. If this is on, you’ll see a little orange area at the top of the iPod nano and a lock icon on the iPod’s screen. If you see either of these, move the switch back and see if this fixes the problem.
If the hold switch wasn’t the problem do the following:
Move the hold switch to the on position and then move it back to off.
Hold down the Menu button on the clickwheel and the center button at the same time. Hold these together for 6-10 seconds. This should restart the iPod nano. You’ll know the iPod is restarting when the screen changes and the Apple logo appears.
If this doesn’t work at first, you should repeat step 4
then create a library of music in itunes and plug your ipod into the computer and sync your ipod with itunes to download the music onto it.
If the ipod has music on it already then you can just scroll through the library on it to listen to the music, if it is not music you want, then follow the above advice and you will be able to copy your own music into itunes then sync it with your ipod.
To get it unlocked: Find a black (or silver) oval switch on it. Move the switch to the left and orange will appear. Your ipod will be unlocked.
To scroll through things: Move your finger around the black circle.
To select something: Press the center black button.
To shut your ipod off: Hold down the pause button (button on bottom of scroll circle) for three seconds. Then switch the hold button to the right to lock it.
To pause something: Press the pause button (button on the bottom of the scroll circle).
