Thanks for reading this. After an overnight power

Try unplugging it from the power outlet and from the modem to powercycle it. If its still the same thing then yes you can press and hold the reset button for 5 secs then release. If your using the default wireless settings found on the sticker of your router then you won't have any problem, however, if you setup your own wireless settings on your router then you made need to set it up once again after the reset.

My desktop is working fine,

Hi there.
First of all, please make sure that you have the latest firmware of your router.
Also, make sure that you are in the right network.
Try resetting the TCP/IP as well. Go to Start - Run. Then type on the command prompt: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Once this is done, restart the PC / Laptop, try and connect again.

Let me know what happens.
Thank you!

Did not successfully complete the new router setup

Check the back of the router, you will see a little button inside an hole near the word RESET. Now you have to push and hold that button, with a pen or something similar, for about 10 seconds. After that your router will be reverted to factory settings and you can do the configuration wizard again.

Got any other "wireless" device that you can try, such an iPod Touch, to try to pickup a signal from your router?

Does your laptop have a switch or slider or FN-key-plus-some-Function-Key-1-thru-12 to disable/enable the laptop's wireless adapter?

If you take your laptop to another location with "free WiFi", such as MacDonalds or Starbucks, can you pickup their wireless network? If not, then the problem is _NOT_ your D-Link router.

If you use your desktop to connect to the web-server "inside" the router, does the wireless transmitter on the D-Link show as "disabled" or "enabled" ?

As of a few days

Consider changing the channel to 11, there is often interference with land line cordless phones, (up to one mile away!)
OR, it is possible that you have seen the entire internet....? Giggle...
Here is what you want to set:

Wireless Router settings:

It is usually easiest to run the install wizard, which you can get from the manufacturers' website, usually for free, but be sure to be ready to set the items listed below:

To get access, start your browser, and put 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, or other address for your unit, into the ADDRESS bar (not search box) of your Internet Browser. Every unit has unique access login and passwords, some are admin with no password, some are admin and admin...seek access information from the website of the manufacturer of your unit. Look under support, downloads, drivers or similar sounding areas.

Things to set:

(Note: Routers are intended to be set by geeks. You have to SAVE EVERY page before you leave it, or the changes will be lost. A geek knows this (apparently). The router gives no protest...just dumps your changes. SAVE OFTEN.)

1. Login password (RECORD THIS!!). Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is typically NOT the security issue.

2. Set a recognizable system ID (descriptive name is easier to find when you need to connect wirelessly).

3. Invoke wireless security of at least WEP.

a. Assign your own access code, 10 digit home or cell #. Consider taping this information to bottom of the router. (Physical access is usually not the security issue.)

4. Check that your router is set to broadcast its' presence.

5. Change the channel of the wireless to 11, and avoid conflict with landline cordless phones. (Big issue, even the neighbors can interrupt).

There are more secure settings available, all the way down to only allowing certain MAC addresses to have access. A MAC address is a digit unique to each and every network card. Like a fingerprint. Most users do not set mac address limits.

I had this exact same problem and why fixed it for me was turning on "UPNP" on your router...after you do this your computer should detect it (then you know it works) and install a bridge or whatever...I had a Dell Router...not sure if this will work for you but check it out...have you recently reset your router?

The problems I was having was I couldn't join some games and I could chat to some people and not others.

Give it a shot...

DIDNT WORK ?

Can I change my security from WPA PSK RADO TYPE

You can switch the security type at any time, but of course you will need to set all the wireless workstations to the new security type as well.
Also be aware that WPA2 is not supported properly, well, or at all on some network cards, and you may find that some devices will connect and others will not.
Honestly, WPA is very secure in your passphrase includes caps, small, numbers and at least one special character such as * or ? or or some such thing.
Also, if your passphrase is or contains a "non-word" like RaUoip or other nonsense that never appears in any known dictionary, you can bet nobody will take the years it would take to crack your WPA passphrase through brute force!
If you aren't currently using WEP (I can crack a 26 digit [13 hex digit, 26 character] key in as little as 8 minutes) then I really wouldn't bother changing to WPA2.

One thing to try is to hard reset the modem and the router. This will work on an unprotected router that won't connect most of the time.
This link is to the data sheet d-link gives for this router. ftp://ftp10.dlink.com/pdfs/products/DIR-655/DIR-655_ds.pdf
This one is to the software and instillation guides they provide. Select your country from the three. Then there is a link to a FAQ below the two download links that will help you find which of the two that you need.

Hi The first thing I would try is
1.You'll need to portforward, go to www.portforward.com and look in the routers for your specific router, then look for the game or service and follow their guide. 2. If the above doesn't work if you cant find your router, you just need to change your Universal Plug and Play UPnP to enabled and your NAT enabled you can do this by logging into your routers admin page and look for them.
