It might be necessary to send it in to Acer for their technicians to look at it as they have parts there. The damage of the display panel many have damaged other parts as well I would suspect the ribbon cable that feeds the display from the main body section. Is power getting to the inverter? Look at the items you have not compared with the other unit such as a ribbon cable- what else is there?

Rather than put a new drive inside your machine, which will mean opening it up and fiddling around in a very limited space, have you considered getting an external hard drive? You can now get 1Tb for a very reasonable price. As long as your hard disk has enough juice to boot you up, you could then switch everything over to your external drive. Consider getting one with its own power source, so it does not put too much pressure on the laptop to power it via the USB.
