Sony VAIO VGN-FS742/W Notebook - Page 3 Questions & Answers
I need to replace the keyboard.
Pop the little cover plate from just above the keyboard. You might have to remove a couple of screws that are located in the battery compartment. Once you get the cover plate off, there are 3 or 4 screws holding the keyboard in. Remove screws, and carefully unplug the ribbon cable. Install new, and you are on your way.
Good Luck

No power
Before assuming the worse, let us assume it is a damaged DC jack. This can be replaced by expert personnel and it costs less than a motherboard replacement.

VAio VGN-FS742 Screen does not display
Try to remove the battery, remove AC adapter, and press and hold power button for 45 sec. reinsert battery, and Plug and try again, if that doesn't solve it, you may need to try to change memory first, (cheapest) or the motherboard or CPU.
Please give good rating if this helps your issue, Thanks

Hey! Laptop goes into Bios...
Ok what you need to do with that issue is let the laptop go into bios mode and then look for the boot options and see what is checked there. You may have it checked to startup with windows bios and if that's the case then you need to change it in bios mode. If you have any other questions please let me know!

Plug in the projector and then press the FN key and while holding it in, press the key with a monitor on it. Probably f4 or f5.

I need a new hard drive for my Sony VGN-FS742 and need help...
Well, according to http://www.clearanceclub.com/depot/quelle_showroom.cgi?sku=4768 your laptop has a 80GB Enhanced IDE drive, so you'd be looking for any 2.5' IDE laptop drive.
Any computer store will be able to sell you one.
That said, you mention your hard drive is fried, but you also say you want to take the old media files off it? Well, if the hard drive is fried, there is nothing coming off it because..well.. its fried.
But if the drive works you dont need a new one. But sounds like you do need to format and reinstall the Operating System.

I have a sony Vaio laptop PCG-K33. The touchpad is
That's a common problem, it's not hard to fix. You'll just have to swap it out. You might be able to find a guide somewhere online but if you just use common sense you should be able to just take the laptop apart and do a swap. Just pay close attention to HOW you got it apart. Ebay is the cheapest place for replacement parts and the K33 is one of the best Sony Laptops ever made btw.

Loses network connection or says low connectivity.
hmmm... need to see if this is from the router end or the problem is your laptop. phone company replaced the router-- did they stick around long enough to see you connect to it with your laptop?
how long has the connection worked properly between the wireless laptop and your basement router?
can you visit a starbucks or whatnot to see if you can surf with your latop (i.e. it's not your laptop wireless card)
can you get a friend to come over to try your router with their wireless laptop?
what if you stay just in teh basement -- does the connection drop at all?
