Can't talk about 2 miles ,swr is good
If your talking at least 2 then it sounds like it is the antenna. Any antenna should talk 10-12 miles on a good day, no matter what radio you're using. So I'd get a second look at that system.
I over drove my finals
Well first you need to be shure you lost the final's. If you had a high am deadkey it's easy to kill final's but on ssb it is possable. Did you try to transmit on am? If so was there any output? If you have checked the mic and if you have a power mic checked the batt. Put a watt meter in line on am and see if there is a carrier adj. The rf power. If there is life then there could be other problem's. I do peek & tune and small mod's and repairs for myself and some local's but work is slow so I'm doing radio work to help pay the bills. If you need more help

I have no transmit
Jeremy, how good are you at soldering? Do you have another radio you can hook up next to the 959? hook that radio to the antenna and the 959 to a dummy load.Key the mic and look at the meter on the second radio to see if it moves. If it doesn't then your soldering skills are required. You may have to replace the final and since this radio may or may not have two of the your soldering will be improving.Check out the audio transformer also.Anything in the tx audio circuit. If you don't want to mess with it get a tech to do it for you.
Microphone not working
I think it is safe to say 90% of radio problems are microphone. You get a cheap one when you by just about any radio. I believe you are seeing the meter move but not getting audio from your talkback. No matter remove the mic jack plug from radio. For you particular radio looking at the end of the jack notice the small raised numbers. These female connectors no matter the mic type wired for this radio model has the following wires connected or in your case disconnected. 1-(Ground) 2- (Audio) 3-(Transmit) and 4- (Receive).A RK56 mic would be my suggestion Astatic 636L the second choice a little cheaper but audio it not a crisp. Don't waste your money a repairing the mic or buying a diesel or road pro or even a cdl mic like a cdl 56 or that Skythumper they are RoadKing 56 wannabees. Sorry about the rant my point is RK56 is Quality.
RED SWR ALERT LIGHT COMES ON WHEN I KEY UP
In most cases if the mic works the common cause is the transmitter in the mother board is shorting out or not soldered to the board properly. another cause could be that your antenna is too close to the CB and will disrupt the signal.
Radio wont transmitt
If there is no movement on the meter. have the SWR's check on the antenna system.. Free to have it checked. at a good shop.. You may have whats called a blown final..( final transmitter transistor) from high swr's. although you may hear, doesn't mean the antenna is OK. the other problems are a bad Audio transistor on the back corner, its the Large TO-264package/TO-218/TO-220 Styles. also. there a small diode on the solder side of circuit board near the 10.240 crystal, if its loose will also not let it key up or TX. make sure all your coax cables are tight, and all the switches are in the correct positions... also doesn't hurt to have a second radio nearby to see if it will transmit to it. for testing. If you need more help let me know.
How to use ssb usb am cb radio
- Well, AM is Amplitude Modulation and Sideband suppresses the carrier and uses only the top half (upper sideband) or lower half (lower sideband) of the wave.
- Whether using AM, USB or LSB you are on the same frequency although if someone is on USB and you are on LSB you will not be able to understand what the other person is saying because you are using different parts of the wave. So 27.185 (channel 19) on AM, USB or LSB is still 27.185.

Is it best to use in am mode in normal trasmitions
- This Galaxy was built as a CB to run on AM (11 Meter). The majority of people on the CB run AM stations. Sideband (upper and lower) is where the carrier is removed and the wave being transmitted on is cut in half. You can do this just fine but mainly if you want to talk to someone and you both know your going to be on Sideband for a little privacy. 38 LSB is a great channel to catch some DX side band on world wide. But yea, AM is the best to find people to chat with.

I have a galaxy dx959
Heat comb or heatsink for dissipating the heat for internal component. In this case the final transistors which could be 2sc1969 older units or Mosfet 520's newer models.
This does not come on this radio from factory. Radio has most likely had another final added for additional transmit power and the heatsink is for additional cooling.
My cb is picking up engine noise. I've grounded it
Something you need to determine is the route this rf interference is entering the radio antenna port or dc voltage supply line.
This Radio you have has a very sensitive receive circuit and i would make sure you are using a good quality well shielded coaxial cable. Perferably 95% shielded i have not found Radio Shack to be a very good source. Check a local truckstop this cable is nothing fancy and a 9ft cable should not be more than 10 bucks.
Often the electric fuel pump or the alternator are the biggest noise generators. They can be toned down by noise filters or capacitors attached at these locations. This is a good read on the subject
